Joshua Redman has made quite a few different styles of albums in his career and played as a sideman in many - an experience which probably enhanced the contribution that other musicians were allowed to bring to this record. Some of the brightest jazz musicians contribute to make just about every song a very good one. It is unusual to buy an album where all songs are decent. Worth mentioning the strength of the contributors - Joe Lovano, Ali Jackson, Chris Cheek, Larry Granadier, Erick Harland, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Reuben Rogers - after a first run through, it is hard to imagine any of the songs without each of its contributors and that must go as credit to Joshua.

The songs are simply presented and therefore easy to ... Read More:

Music : Timeless Tales for Changing Times
Joshua Redman appeared on Jools Holland's Later show many years ago and played "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore". He was breath-takingly good and I rushed out and bought this album not long afterwards. As with all great Jazz players Redman's live performance was better than the studio performance.

Here he plays a mixture of acknowledged Jazz standards like 'Summertime' and some contemporary 'pop' standards such as Lennon & McCartneys 'Eleanor Rigby' and Stevie Wonder's 'Visions'. Listening to these tracks you can hear clear influences. On 'Summertime' at times you could swear you were listening to Coltrane!

The band are very very good. Redman plays Tenor, Alto and Soprano Saxes. Brad Mehldau is on Piano, larry ... Read More:

This is a good album. This is a very good album and it comes thoroughly recommended to anyone who has heard a lot of positive noises made about this outrageoulsy gifted (and still young) tenor saxophonist, and who wants to listen for themselves. Unfortunately, he has yet to come close to the high standards which this album set upon its release. His sound is instantly recogniseable, and his phrasing owes much to the likes of Rollins, Coltrane and Dexter Gordon. The tunes are lovingly rendered with a sympathetic band of young and technically blessed musicians, such as Greg Hutchinson on drums and pianist Kevin Hays. The overall sound is clean and pleasing on the ear, owing much to the engineers at the recording studios. The take of 'I feel good' ... Read More:

A fine quartet with Redman on sax, Brad Mehldau on piano, Christian McBride on bass and Brian Blade on drums. The first track Sweet Sorrow sets the albums tone, its a mournful ballad nicely handled.
Chill and Rejoice are progressively more upbeat but the whole album is very laid back. On Rejoice Melhdau reminds me of the late Don Grolnick.
The pining Faith plays like a pop ballad.
Alone In The Morning is a bit sleazy for me.
Track 7 Dialogue gets a bit more daring as the band frees out with Coltranes influence shining through. The Oneness Of Two (In Three) has a main theme reminiscent of an earlier Coltrane offering.
Its a decent album with talented playing but probably lacks that bit of originality that would set it apart. ... Read More:
