This album features the greatest song ever written or recorded "LOVE WILL TEAR US APART` - The rest of the songs are OK - but `Love Will Tear Us Apart` is a timeless classic, a work of art that I play about 30 times every day...it is playing now as I write this.
The vocal performance of the late great Ian Curtis is pure pop pefection...I want this song played at my funeral along with "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O`Connor and "My Death" by DAVID BOWIE.
Those three songs are better than any tonic, more moving then any hymn or national anthem and give more of a buzz than any drug.
If you dont like Joy Division or New Order - still BUY this album because "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a reason for living...

Essential. Peerless. This is the end product of millions of years of evolution. A terrible, cold beauty that stands as testament to the meaninglessness of existence. Play it at your sister.

This remarkable debut on Factory has simply grown in stature in the years since its release. At odds with the general Madchester scene, and indeed with everything else around at the time, it was impossible to tell who the members of this band had been listening to. Though our listening perceptions are inevitably coloured by the tragic future of Ian Curtis, there is an undeniably awesome stature in these impeccably produced sides

Many things have been said about Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, and yet so many things have been left unsaid or cannot be said. This is an another-worldly record, so of its time and yet transcending it; so shaped by the creaking, decrepit Britain of the late 1970s, new wave, Northern soul and yet pointing to timeless qualities.

I just remember when this album came out - and reading the generally positive review in Record Mirror at the time (hey, I was also reading NME and Sounds at the same time!) - in which they gave a fairly accurate description of the band, its sound and this album, giving it 7 out of 10, saying it was influenced by the Doors, and more '69 than '79.

This album was such a gorgeous thing to hold and behold at the time; ... Read More:

This complimation picks up the odd bits and pieces not included in albums before and after Ian Curtis's suicide.

This is further evidence of the importance of Joy Division's works. The bleak beauty may be better reflected on the studio albums but this shows a different edge.It includes the wonderful Love Will Tear Us Apart, their best known song.Better still is the awe inspiring Atmosphere,a icy synth classic in the Kraftwerk vibe,or the ridicously catchy Transmission.

Also, included are lesser known songs such as the basic Digtal or the wonderful Novelty.

You have to wonder what could've been, had tragedy not struck in such as it did.

God, what is the point of releases like this! Remember we used to think the music industry was clueless and not interested in music in decades long gone. And that punk was meant to change things. Well dream on; things are worse than they ever have been with horrid little money making exercises like this.

The guy from Croatia hit the nail on the head in his review - when he said he missed his vinyl copy of the original album. That was a gorgeous, intricate piece of art, design and music to hold in one's hand, look at, treasure and listen to. I aint even a vinyl junkie; I am not making that point; I have nothing against CDs - what I am against is this butchering of original albums like this.

We get what we deserve in some sense. Pointless releases ... Read More:

Joy Division are legendary, important, brilliant, but they did only actually release two 'fully formed' albums and two proper singles. Thus, all this 'Collector Edition' rubbish is in truth a blatant, commercial rip-off and brazen film tie in with the Ian Curtis biopic 'Control'.

Still has always been the ugly duckling of Joy Division releases; not a fully fledged release, more a tidying up exercise and part cash-in for Factory after the death of Curtis and his elevation to sainthood (and subsequent commercial profile).

That said, I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the original issue of Still. Well, ok, the studio half or nine tracks which manage out of a collection of assortments to sound somehow cohesive; when I first heard these tracks years ... Read More:

Millions of words have been written on how important JOy Division have been in the grand scheme of things, so I'm not going to add any more than what's already been said.

The important thing, of course, is the music. And it sound as fresh and vital now as it did all those years ago.

Perfect.

Joy Division were a great band, but they weren't around for long. Both of their two studio albums are stunning, and the companion compilation, Substance, mopped up most of the overflow - standalone singles, 12" only versions, b-sides - and acted as a nice companion piece. Still, however, is not really a worthy addition to the band's catalogue.

Weighing in at 20 tracks, the first nine are offcuts, followed by a cover, and the last ten a live gig. For the most part, the first nine songs imply that the band's better judgement was correct. Outside of the songs which overlap with Substance - 'Dead Souls,' 'Glass' - there is nothing here as heartbreaking as 'Love Will Tear Us Apart,' as visceral as 'Day Of The Lords.' There are some songs which would otherwise make it as B-sides - 'Exercise One' ... Read More:
