this is my favourite set of the beethoven symphonies..the sound is superb, and the playing has plenty of energy and feeling - quite a fast pace to other versions though

This 2005 performance of Beethoven's 9th symphony I believe should be considered the benchmark recording of this century so far.

The London Symphony Orchestra using their own LSO Live label has combined digital recording methods with a `Live' venue (London's Barbican) to produce an absolutely stunning version of Beethoven's final symphony.

It's clear from the start of the first movement that this recording is a good one - no evidence of audience noise from a supposed `live' recording - and by the time the Ode to Joy fourth movement arrives almost 45 minutes later the anticipation is of a big finale.

This 25 minute finale is sheer brilliance, for me this is the most perfectly performed and exciting ... Read More:

Album Description
Described as a `sacred trilogy', Berlioz's oratorio L'enfance du Christ began as a short piece called Shepherds' Farewell. It tells the story of the birth of Jesus and the journey of the Holy Family as they escape Bethlehem and head across Egypt to the city of Saïs. Unlike many of the composer's more flamboyant works, it is an exquisite and gentle composition scored for relatively small forces.

CD Reviews
`If ever a conductor lived the works of a composer, it's Davis with Berlioz. The London Symphony Orchestra play with delicacy, the Tenebrae Choir are immaculate, and there's an impeccable set of soloists'

This is a very powerful account, beautifully paced and well played (and sung). It might have been the very best record of the 9th in the catalogue. Then along came the Vanska account - which is from another world altogether - but if you don't like hearing new ideas in performances of well-loved works you might just prefer this Haitink. However it is, no-one could regret buying this record.

I've only ever owned one recording of Leos Janácek's 'Glagolitic Mass', the one by Karel Ancerl and the Czech Philharmonic, with Czech soloists and chorus. It completely satisfied me from a musical perspective and I never sought out another recording. But it has been getting long in the tooth -- recorded, if I'm not mistaken, in the 1960s -- and so when this new one came along I figured 'why not?', and I must say I am not disappointed.

Strangely, I had never read much, if anything, about Janácek or about the Mass. In Gavin Plumley's excellent notes for this recording he makes the point that Janácek was skeptical about religion, perhaps because he had spent so much of his youth in residence as a chorister in an Augustinian monastery. ...
