These two created their musical partnership after a random pairing on a concert bill (2005's Daughters of Albion concert in Cork). There must have been much mutual intuition floating about in the sessions because they sound like they've been playing together for years. Kathryn has said that "the whole experience was the musical equivalent of standing naked in front of the person you love and wanting them to like you." In various sheds and garages (independent artists always say that! But Kathryn wouldn't lie to us, would she?!), they recorded twenty one songs in six days, whittling them down to the thirteen released on this wondrous record.

A languorous and hushed, homely atmosphere wraps itself around the songs, with Williams ... Read More:

This is a smashing album. She has a beautiful voice with which she manages to pull together some great performances of this collection of well known tracks.

I often play it last thing at night, but as it's so relaxing and moody I rarely get to hear the last tracks, as I go into zzzzzz time. So I know the first half of the album very well. Must rig my CD player to play in reverse order.

I don't normally go for the soft reflective songstress type, but this time I've picked a winner.

Thanks to Mr J. Ross for promoting the album on the radio so much.

A few of the tracks on this CD are perfect, beautiful, soft, mesmerising and something Mummy could enjoy too... but I found the majority of tracks incredibly depressing - and thats not what you need after having a baby!!! I wish I'd paid more attention to the track listing and bought something else...

This is a must-have collector's set, and amazing value.

I really bought it for Previn's rendering of the 1st Symphony, of which I had heard much good. It is indeed a very fine rendering, but I agree with the previous reviewer that Sargent's was in another class: crisper syncopations, MORE tension to my ears (exquisite menace, excitement, and melancholy), very finely judged transitions, altogether zippier and fresher.

Fortunately I still have the Sargent on LP, but the current unavailability of Sargent recordings on CD is becoming an obsession with me. Why no Sibelius 5th, for instance, or Pohjola's Daughter? Do recording companies not trust their ears? Do they still harbour prejudices born out of sarcastic (envious?) ... Read More:

Ever since i was introduced to Classical music by my father at home and in music class at school i have appreciated the classics ability to soothe the mind, to be able to sink back and allow the mind to be massaged through the ears so as to be able to forget much of what troubles us, and Radio FM have again provided me with a beautiful continuity of music on these CDs to do just that. Gone is the need to turn the LP and for most of us we have the ability to place all the CDs in to a system and listen for hours on end, and with this set gone also is the need to skip tracks, each seems to flow naturally from the previous and merge nicely into the next, while the composers can take pride in their music, Radio FM can be proud of their management of all these ... On first hearing, I can understand the varied reviews. However, like so much of her work, following a 3rd "listen" it's got me hooked. Kathryn's strength has always IMHO been the songs, and this has got some very good ones - Sandy L, Glass Bottom Boat, Sustain Pedal and When. Yes, if you are new to Kathryn you probably wouldn't start here, but if you did buy it and were unhappy, put the headphones on and give it another go - it's worth the effort.

I only discovered Kathryn Williams' music earlier this year and was fortunate to see her and Neill MacColl in concert. Really like their album "Two" and bought "Old Low Light" on the strength of this, plus the excellent live rendition of "Little Black Numbers", the opening track, at the concert.

I now play this album very frequently, especially for "Little Black Numbers" and the fantastic "No One Takes You Home". "Wolf", "Mirrorball", "Tradition" and "Swimmer" are other outstanding tracks for me. Kathryn's voice is wonderfully breathy and the instrumentation is really interesting and fits the material well.

Kathryn's work deserves to be known much more widely.

When I bought the album after this "Little Black Numbers" I could not help but think to myself does this singer-songwriter have any more albums and what are they like?

So with that in mind I tracked this album down, and that was in the year 2000, and low and behold I find it's been re-released after the success of other female singer-songwriters of recent times.

This collection of 10 tracks that was her debut album, was released in 1999 on her own "CAW" label is just over 32 minutes long and is of the same low-fi approach of the previous album.

Ms. Williams has even done the sleeve artwork herself as well as played guitar, and on some of the tracks co-produced and on some done the arrangement of the track.

On the song "Something like ... Read More:

By the end of the first track, 'We dug a hole', you'll be hooked; 40 minutes later, as the album ends, you'll be in love, 'Little Black Numbers' has that effect on you. Beautifully simple songs performed effortlessly by a group of talented musicians, provide the backdrop for Kathryn Williams mesmerising laments of love lost. Laura Reid's Cello deserves a special mention, as it provides a warm, almost heartbreaking, accompaniment to Williams' hushed vocals and melodic guitar playing.

The likes of 'Soul to feet' ("Is your life so exciting?/You have to tell everyone you meet"), and 'Tell the truth as if it were lies' ("Well here is a secret just for you/I'm more now I'm not with you") highlights Kathryn Williams' gift of writing biting lyrics about heartbreak without ever ...
