The librettist of Joseph and His Brethren was not Jennens or Morell or any of the other names familiar from Handel's oratorios. It was a certain James Miller, a rural vicar who sounds as if he would have been interesting to know. He queered his pitch with the ecclesiastical authorities by writing stage satires, and he died at age 36 shortly after Joseph was premiered. However before his untimely demise he set what ought to have become a precedent. Appreciating, it seems, that the plot of the oratorio, although not complicated, might be unintelligible to its audience without some background information, he provided what he called an 'advertisement' summarising the biblical story. The great joy in these box sets is seeing the transition from the classical era of Salieri to the bel canto era of Rossini and Bellini. But don't expect every track to be a masterwork. A difficult choice but possibly my favourite Abercrombie release. The move to a larger group after a few years with the organ trio format came as a surprise (the trio seemed to be settled in, all its albums are simply beautiful) but oh boy does it pay off. The inclusion of Feldman's microtonal violin is a masterstroke and Wheeler is simply himself (enough said). What a line-up it is, they play with real empathy throughout. But then they would. Standout for me? Gimme Five.

This recording of Gloriana does full justice to this staggeringly beautiful piece. It has been little performed over the last 50 years, but is an absolute masterpiece. A poignant story, and with Britten's 'less is more' philosophy underlying the music - buying this record for track 15 alone would be worth it (the lyre song). All voices in theis recording are in very fine form, and the orchestra and conducting are top notch. A joy.
