As a compilation of 'the best' of Kevin Ayers work it's not bad and a very good start point for the first 11 years what's missing is recordings from the other 28 years.
The pick of songs from the first 11 is wonderful, how can you go wrong the Syd Barrett version of 'singing a song' known as 'religious Experience' should attract Pink Floyd fans who have not already purchased the wonderful first album 'Joy of a Toy'. For the more serious Kevin Collectors the attraction of Live show from 1974 with radically different version of favourites 'we did it again' and 'why are we sleeping', missing some excellent songs always subjective but 'Lunatics Lament' from 'Shouting at the Moon' is a big favourite of mine with its massive Mike Oldfield Guitar ... Kevin Ayers belongs to that list of late 1960s musicians such as Nick Drake and Syd Barrett who retain their English accent on record. Indeed, Ayers is also one of those who largely ploughs his own furrow while betraying occasional glimpses of outside influence. Routinely described as eccentric, his debut album is aptly named as joy is the feeling that predominates, despite several mood changes. 'Joy Of A Toy Continued' sets out his manifesto with its village green carnival attitude. Both 'Town Feeling' and 'The Clarietta Rag' partly resemble John Lennon's style, the latter having a similar melody to 'Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite'. Ayers is much farther out than The Beatles, however, this being an album you might expect Sergeant Pepper to make ... Read More:

Unless you are a keen fan of Kevin Ayers this is not the best place to start. I first listened to him around 19702. The Unfairground is nowhere near as good as the early albums such as Joy of a Toy, Whatevershebringswesing or Shooting at the Moon. Nevertheless, it is a good album and considerably better than most of his albums from the mid-70s onward. Unlike the other albums I have recommended there is no experimentation going on here. For more experimental music check out his contributions to early Soft Machine.

Listening to this album for the first time is like walking blindfold: you don't know what you're going to bump into next. There isn't enough space on the average album to contain all of Kevin Ayers's ideas and this is no exception. The conventional, the weird, the dark and the beautiful all appear and it seems effortless.

'There Is Loving' makes great use of orchestral musicians, scaling the highest peaks and diving into the deepest troughs. 'Margaret' and 'Lullaby' are gentle and sublime, featuring strong melodies and honeyed textures. 'Oh My' and 'Champagne Cowboy Blues' are more music hall and vaudeville, not to everyone's taste but entirely valid and an essential representation of one side of Ayers's personality. You have to embrace his ... Read More:

I have loved this album since it was first released and it just gets better and better as the years have passed. The first album is charming and lovely, the second a bit too patchy, the third is very good, but Bananamour is the one. It has everything I associate with Kevin Ayers. It is fun, stoned, happy, warm, silly, soulful, melodic, laid back, engaging, tasteful, drunken, intelligent, unpretentious, joyful music, well played (take a bow Steve Hillage) and well produced. The remastered cd sounds great and the booklet includes the inserts which came with the original album, plus an informative essay (although I would still like to know who played the synth on "Decadence"). The extra tracks enhance the original. Oh, and just like the other three remasters, ... Read More:

Kevin Ayers is infuriating. No doubt about it. There isn't a single wholly successful album, and after "The Confessions Of Doctor Dream" there's nothing you'd own up to owning. But all the early albums are vital: "Joy Of A Toy" for its clutch of quirky pop songs, "Whatevershebringswesing" for its shrill orchestrated "There Is Loving", "Bananamour" for its glorious affirmation of the word "stoned", "Doctor Dream" for that extraordinary side-length bad trip of a title track. But head and shoulders above the others, in both terms of being musically adventurous and impossibly bloody-minded, there's 1970's "Shooting At The Moon". You'll love it, even the bits you hate.

This is the classic and short lived Whole World line-up: Ayers on laid-back baritone vocals ... Read More:

7.June 1, 1974 by: Kevin Ayers, John Cale, Eno, Nico

I had this on vinyl in the 70s, and it's a glaring reminder that records used to have two sides. Side 1 is appalling, almost unlistenable - from Eno's squawks to the lumbering dirges contributed by the former Velvets, Cale and Nico. I think I played it once. Side 2 however is pure joy. The great Kevin Ayers strolls out to sing five proper songs with a kind of lazy exuberance and the sort of easy charm that only slightly posh Englishmen seem to have. The band are tight and the guitar solos by Mike Oldfield and the underrated Ollie Halsall are exquisite.

Some critics have observed that this performance would not give new listeners any indication of Ayers' seminal role in the British experimental and "progressive" rock music scene of the late 60s and ... Read More:

Music : What More Can I Say

In the last year Kevin Ayers fans have been spoilt with a New album Unfairground and 3 archive release this being the latest (Hyde Park 1970, and Songs for Insane times being the other two), Reel recordings dive into the Kevin Ayers archives for a second time and this time we get some home demos I would guess circa 1975/6 from the content. Made up mainly of songs from the Dr Dream album in primitive form (acoustic guitar and band demo). What is excellent is the title track which is almost 20 minutes of Kevin explaining the concept and playing tunes either, for a band to demo, or to sell to the record label to fund the recording either way a fascinating insight into one of the quirkiest mind in the music business.
Recommended for any Kevin Ayers Fan.

This collection is valuable for the assortment of non-album tracks and previously unreleased tracks, drawn mostly from his strongest period, on the Harvest label, and includes the abandoned single Soon Soon Soon, and the shelved single version of The Lady Rachel. Both previously appeared only on the long-deleted and superior vinyl compilation Odd Ditties in 1976, though are now both now to be found on the remastered Joy Of A Toy. Other re-issues have bonus tracks that are duplicated here.

The CD is therefore generally of most use to first-time buyers and to those who have Kevin Ayers albums in versions that came without bonus tracks as there are no exclusive tracks here.
