Just buy it and get that head banging!

4th and 5th Form parties (not discos yet) would not have been the same without 'Hall of the Crimson King': And what respectable bedroom would not have THAT cover thrown casually in view?

Yes the music has help up against time - and the voice still cuts through to even today's youngsters (tried it out on a local victim - he went and downloaded the album straight away - didn't get the cover though).

And I love the packet - mini reproduction LP cover!

`In the Court of the Crimson King' (1969), arguably one of the greatest records ever made, was certainly going to be very difficult to follow, especially with a change in line-up. Unfortunately, it shows. It is certainly not up to the majestic criterion of `In the Court'. However, that is not to say it is not a great record. It is.

Greg Lake's haunting vocals of the opening hurtle into the explosion that is the magnificent riff of `Pictures of a City'. This honestly is a fantastic track, although structurally it is merely an extended copycat of `21st Century Schizoid Man'. The melodic and acoustic feel of `Cadence and Cascade' is wonderfully carried by Lake's smooth vocal timbre, and is a awe-inspiring calm after `Pictures' (again, ... Read More:

Other favourable reviews have nailed why this is such an important album and why KC fans usually rate this highly.
It's a staggeringly powerful album yet with some wonderful light moments. Robert Fripp remains for me a guitar hero and while his playing here is generally restrained in combination with Wetton's bruising yet not overpowering bass and Bruford's excellent percussion work it all blends in one exceptional album. I find it hard not to love all the tracks but my favourites are, in reverse order, One more red nightmare, Red, Fallen angel and the piéce de resistance Starless

What an album, possibly one of the craziest things ever released that isn't just weird rubbish. This is the farthest anyone has ever pushed the boat out and still got good results. To top it all of its got some great rockin' moments as well!
'Lark Tongues in Aspic Part 2,' is a prog masterpiece, as powerful as it is baffling. 'Exiles,' is as chilling as it is rocking; and 'Easy Money,' ? how cool can you get?
John Wetton's voice is better here than with any of his other bands, Rob Fripp is at the top of his game and Bruford (fresh from Yes) nails it. Often underrated however, Dave Cross is a very integral part of this album, and should be more widely recognized.
A great album for anyone who likes progressive music!

When this came out i remember being really dissappointed. After all, there was no Greg Lake vocal, no Ian McDonald flute/keyboards and most importantly songwriting skills and also none of the brilliant drumming of Michael Giles which so characterised In The Court of The Crimson King.
So revisiting the re-mastered 30th Anniversary cd today , i am pleasantly surprised to note that the third album is actually quite good and certainly has some good moments. Cirkus and Lady of the Dancing Water stand out as being the most accessible tracks. Mel Collins flute playing is sublime throughtout - as is Fripp's guitar work.
This is still predominantly a songs album - the free-form jazz was to come later. Whilst not as strong as In The court of the Crimson ... Read More:

With this release and the companion Vol 2 what is obvious is that King Crimson from this era were primarily a live band and that the 3 studio albums from this period(Larks Tongue in Aspic,Starless & Bible Black and Red)were in comparison rather muted affairs.

The material from this era had a lot of improvisation which is why the live format is/was a much better representation of this incarnation of the band.

Over the last 15 years Robert Fripp has overseen a fantastic re- appraisal of Crimson ouput via a variety of formats many thru the Collectors Club. Now previously hard to obtain recordings are becoming widely available-somethiing that would never happen on a major record label.

All of the releases by King Crimson over ... Read More:

In the 70's I loved this album. Super ballads, heavy & very complex elsewhere. ALWAYS played brilliantly. However I wont give it 5 stars because you should get the double CD The Nightwatch instead.

As other reviewers have said, most of Starless... was live & included within The Nightwatch & the latter has additional, exhilarating stuff. Cant recommend the Nightwatch highly enough, its the best Crim album of that era, unless you are a saddo like me & care to get The Great Deceiver 4 cd boxset of staggering live performances.

I first heard this album when I was in high school during the end of the '70s, and found it pleasant and intriguing but seldom placed it on my turntable. Then I grew accustomed to it along the years, and about a decade later all along the '80s it became my ONLY KC album constantly played. Nowdays about 20 years later, I still play it on a regular basis and enjoy all the "nuances" it can develop, all the reviews stating it as a fantastic album or as an average quality for KC (which anyway means stellar for other bands) or even as a poor and weak album, tell a part of the story, they are all true simultaneously, depending on your mood and inner state of mind. So this is the only recomendation I can make, this is no easy listening stuff, it is an album which is made to survive ... Read More:
