If you're like me and have never paid any interest to KD Lang before now and have not heard any of her stuff except 'Constant Craving', then read on. I stumbled upon this album a couple of months after it had been released. As usual, I searched YouTube for any tracks on there to get a first impression and to see if I wanted to investigate further. I also watched a recent interview with KD, interspersed with tracks from Watershed. I heard 'I Dream Of Spring' and really liked it. I thought I'd download the full album and give it a listen. I love it! It is full of delicate acoustic guitars and beautiful strings (but not overbearing), as well as soft percussion. The best thing though, is KD's voice. Nigel Hess's piano concerto was commissioned in memory of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother: hence the somewhat portentous titles for each of the movements. It is a shame that it occupies a CD all on its own (at under 23 minutes) and it would make an excellent coupling with Howard Blake's, the latter piece having been dedicated to Princess Diana. Hess is primarily a film music composer, and clearly needed the `hook' of a extra-musical concept in order to get his creative juices flowing, however he wouldn't be alone amongst composers in this. Certainly the concerto itself shows no signs of being any kind of detailed narrative. If you're expecting a deep and intellectual work, then this isn't for you, but if you value melodic interest ... This is smooth sensual songcraft at its best, and that is why I suggest that the album, with its dark lyrics, is best enjoyed by sharing the musical ecstacy withsomeone else! KD Lang's lush voice washes over you like warm oil! There are lots of strings, and quite a few Eastern influences here and there I thought. One to play again and again ( but not in the car - seriously - it's late night music.

If the interviews and concert reviews are to be believed, Chinese pianist Lang Lang has as many critics as he has admirers. For example, in a particularly scathing account (Telegraph.co.uk) of a Festival Hall concert in November 2007 his performance was described as `blatant showmanship and a compendium of party tricks' and `such a grotesque parody of Liszt's sixth Hungarian Rhapsody as the one that crowned this abysmal evening'. Even worse perhaps is the implied criticism of the audience by stating that `the talent he chooses to reveal is one for the superficially spectacular and the substantially shallow'. Lang's silky voice lubricates Bennett's huskiness to produce this masterpiece. This album stands in a league of its own, it is more than just a collaboration between two artists. The sound production is exceptional and the track selection is heavenly. Add it to your collection if you are a jazz lover - trust me, you won't regret it.

Basically, if you enjoyed The Painted Veil, then the soundtrack is definitely something you should buy. I'm not generally interested in film sountracks, as they're often pretty bland, but The Painted Veil is definitely an exception. It captures the romance, death, passion, and bleakness of the film. The best tracks are (in my opinion) River Waltz, Kitty's Theme and The Painted Veil.

I'm not an expert on classical music and could not offer an opinion on whether this is Lang Lang at his best, but I can say that to me this recording is simply wonderful and at times, breathtaking.
