This is as fine an introduction to the works of Leonard Cohen as could be imagined. The track list, selected by the man himself, covers almost every period of his recorded output (Cohen is not prolific in the way, say, Bob Dylan is, or Neil Young), but I do feel some truly great stuff has been overlooked, i.e. the hushed, but haunting version of 'Story Of Isaac' from 1973's LIVE SONGS, which is one of the most profound things that anyone has ever written, the great live recordings from FIELD COMMANDER COHEN: Tour Of 1979, which admittedly was not released until after THE ESSENTIAL LEONARD COHEN appeared. As an album that you hear when your parents play it and come back to later to realise it's simply amazing, you can't get much better than this. Leonard Cohen is an amazing man, who has created an amazing number of amazing songs over the year. For me, though, this is his essential album. Partly it's because my parents played it over and over when it first came out, and when I was too young to understand music like this for all its depth. I came back to it about five years ago to find that not only does it contain breathtaking songs, but I didn't have to wait a while to gain familiarity with them. Cohen made three classic albums with John Lissaeur at the helm: 1974's New Skin For The Old Ceremony, 1979's Recent Songs, but at the apex of these achievements stands 1984's Various Positions, in that it paved the way for a new audience to discover Leonard Cohen afresh. This wasn't done by just adding the odd synthesised drone here and there, for there is the same continuity of themes and musical genres threaded consistently through the works (compare New Skin's 'Why Don't You Try?' or 'I Tried To Leave You' alongside Recent Songs' 'Came So Far For Beauty' or 'The Smokey Life', i.e., and you'll find they sit naturally next to tracks like 'Hallelujah' or 'Coming Back To You', whereas 'Night Comes On' and 'If It Be Your Will' would not have sounded out ... My introduction to Leonard Cohen was on a vinyl CBS sampler which included "Sisters of Mercy". On the basis of that track I bought "Songs of Leonard Cohen" (on vinyl) and many subsequent albums. As has been said before I think that this album is probably Cohen's strongest overall - there are other gems on many of his albums but no other album contains so many songs which have stood the test of time. 'Suzanne' (and 'Bird on a wire' from 'Songs from a Room') were even covered by Fairport Convention - a band not noted for a shortage of self-penned material. I tend to disagree with the reviewers who think Cohen is the best interpreter of his music; perhaps at times but generally his voice is the penalty paid for the pleasure of the songs. I think ... This is my first Cohen album and it really is magnificent. Cohen was 36 when it was released and the album has the feeling of an artist who fears his best days may be behind him. This is especially obvious in the lyrics of Last Years Man and Diamonds in the Mine. For whatever reason his voice in almost every song sounds world weary, bitter and angry. It leaves us with one of the best albums I've ever heard. It takes a number of listens for the beautiful imagery and deep lyrics to lodge themselves in your brain and start to haunt you. Not to mention the beautiful music and arrangements. It is also a very personal album. It is almost frightening to think that the events described in "Famous Blue Raincoat" actually happened. This one took quite a few listenings before I began to realise the strength of some of the lyrics and the emotional power of just about every track. Some don't like the strong presence of female vocals - personally I love this especially on 'Alexandra Leaving' and 'Here it is'. I love this album and think others who know Cohen's work will too - and hopefully, many others who don't know his work will hereby get to know it.

In many ways I'm almost glad that Cohen is loathed so much in some quarters. You used to be able to buy perfect copies of this on vinyl for a pound from boot-sales. You couldn't imagine a pound being better-spent. I won't go into great depth here: if you know the tracks (and you should) you'll know how resplendent and timeless they all are. But, for a bit of fun, I propose my own alternative list, had I compiled the original album. As follows: SUZANNE, STRANGER SONG, SISTERS OF MERCY, SO LONG MARIANNE, HEY THAT'S NO WAY TO SAY GOODBYE, BIRD ON THE WIRE, THE PARTISAN, AVALANCHE, FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT, JOAN OF ARC, WHO BY FIRE, FIELD COMMANDER COHEN.

Alors la découverte de 2 bonus tracks a illuminé mon dimanche d'été et j'ai lu avec grand intérêt et attention les contributions des autres fans de léonard. Tracks on this 1992 album range from the soulful cover of Frederick Knight's Be For Real, to the flowing, country-tinged Closing Time and the sombre Anthem with its comforting lines: "There is a crack in everything/That's how the light gets in." Democracy is another tour de force with a lovely undulating rhythm and gripping lyrics whilst Light As The Breeze must rate as one of his most moving love songs. As Cohen's sole album of new material in the 1990's, this was a worthy follow-up to 1988's I'm Your Man and remains a masterpiece of poetry in song. I've been a Cohen fan as far back as I can remember. I had a feeling I wouldn't be disappointed by this album, since Cohen's live backup singers are legendary, and I was right. These are without a doubt the most beautiful and emotional versions of the songs ever recorded, and I find it impossible to listen to the album as mere background music; as soon as the music starts playing, I can't help but close my eyes and just let the music envelop me completely. The songs "Bird on a Wire" and "Sisters of Mercy" are worthy of special mention. The tempo is lower, the saxophone sexier and the vocals deeper and more intense than ever before, and the result defies description.
