Used Price: £7.48

Opera Proibita (prohibited opera) continues Cecilia Bartoli's trend for producing `themed' albums, but this time instead of concentrating on a single composer - so far we've had Rossini, Mozart, Vivaldi, Gluck and Salieri - we have a collection of 15 baroque vocal pieces by Handel, Scarlatti and Caldara which all share the common, and perhaps unfortunate claim for those composers, of being written during the period around 1700 during which opera music was banned in much of Europe.

The album song list is an alternation between slow and fast arias and recitatives, and the style is pure Bartoli throughout, from the opening `All'arme si accesi guerrieri' (Attention fierce warriers) sung at such breakneck speed that the orchestra ... Read More:

This is is a really excellent intro to all of Rameau's main tunes, nicely woven together, with a fine balance between orchestra and vaiuous instrumental voices.

Anybody interested in exploring the sound world of Rameau could do a lot worse than start with this CD.

The Messiah is self-recommending as Handel's masterpiece; but there are many, many recordings. I have a fair number and this is my favourite by some way. Marc Minkowski is a really wonderful conductor. He is still young and has already achieved much in the baroque repertoire. This is a lovely recording, featuring as it does Lynne Dawson and Magdelena Kozena. Brian Bannatyne-Scott sings a powerful and engaging bass. Minkowski's own band, the Musiciens du Louvre supply the music. Highly recommended and curiously under-rated or perhaps simply not known, but this is an Archiv disc, so hardly an obscure music company. Look out for his other recordings, such as Ariodante. As a former bassoonist Minkowski has a particularly good feel ... Read More:

As a BIG fan of Minkowski I am sorry to say that I find this recording disappointing, especially in light of his recordings of Handel's "Teseo" and "Ariodante". But then, to be fair, can any other recording ever equal or surpass Jacobs' reading of "Giulio Cesare"? It is hard to imagine.

The only real star performance is delivered by the mezzo Magdalena Kozena as Cleopatra. Kozena has some difficulty sustaining the high-lying passages of this fiendish part written for Francesca Cuzzoni. Cleopatra is an interesting character on many levels. She is one of the first of Handel's three-dimensional characters. Instead of being portrayed as a young woman who matures as the opera progresses, Minkowski's Cleopatra stays at the same emotional level ... Read More:

8.Handel: Italian Cantatas HWV 99, 145 & 170 by: Magdalena Kozená Les Musiciens du Louvre Marc Minkowski

Oh dear! It would be such a nice collection of rarely heard Handel cantatas if only Kozena didn't try to be a Bartoli or a von Otter! Not being quite in the same league as an artist and personality as the two divas, Kozena tries to infuse these cantatas with pathos and drama using lots of aggressive vocal gestures, but she isn't able to fill these creations with flesh and blood and make them believable (in this repertoire, you'd have to go back to Janet Baker to hear what I mean). So, we have exaggerated recitativi (sometimes to almost grotesque dimensions) and plain - if often ravishingly lovely - singing. I do find her voice mesmerizing when it just flows surrounded with an aura of melancholy (as in some of her earlier discs, including Handel's Dixit ... Read More:

Three years after Minkowski's classic Ariodante, he recorded another manjor Handel work, this Hercules.
Von Otter, Dawson and Croft joined him again with equal success.
Although this oratorium is somewhat less accessible than the opera Ariodante, all the superlatives I wrote in my Ariodante review can be used again.
The work starts with Dejanira mourning Hercules' abscense, somewhat exaggerating her sadness. That seems to be typical of Dejanira's character because she doesn't need much to be swifted from one mood to another. When her husband returns, extreme joy immediately
tempered by jealousy when she sees the beautiful prisoner Iole.
This is the center of the drama, Dejanira's jealousy makes her murder Hercules.
