Great record from the 70s - highlights being the protest songs for George Lindo and Darcus Howe. The anger is always tempered by the poetry, the intelligence and the infectious dance beats. Sounds as good now as it did then.

Dennis Bovell's production on Bass Culture is outstanding, maybe not up there with Making History, but still above and beyond the call of genius. This is my favourite LKJ record though, for the lyrics as much as the sound: Shock-black bubble-doun beat bouncing rock-wise tumble-doun sound music bass history is a moving is a hurting black story. And the lyrics to track 5, but you'll have to buy a copy of the Penguin Classics "Mi Revalueshanary Fren" for that. Cos all I've got here to quote (in poem format) from is EA Markham's "Hinterland" (recommended, for what it's worth), which along with above excerp has an LKJ interview that has stayed in my mind for ages: Read More:

Splendid stuff with LKJ doing what he does; the reggae poet with the deep, rich and distinctive voice adds his clever lyrics over the top of a solid reggae backing. He has politically and socially aware commnent that is astute and perceptive. It's made more appoachable by being expressed without agression and without strident tones that can get in the way of the message elsewhere by those of the rap and hip hop generation. They may try to get you to see their point by holding a gun at your head and shouting. With LKJ you sit down with a large galss of rum, the bass beating rhythmically whilst he explains.

i had this reggae album quite a few years ago, until someone "borrowed" it.seems they liked it as much as i do! i loved the music as well as the lyrics. "sonny lettah" has always been the one track that sticks out in my head the most. i can't wait to get my new copy!!
