A collection of songs from one of the USA'S most underated bands. Apart from a few personal choices, the ommision of Day and Night is a major error. That said if you want a broad look at Little Feat this album will satisfy your curiosity. Llowell
George slide guitar hits the spot and the rythmn section holds everything together. They deserved more fame than they got and on a good night there was no better live band around.

I defy you to find four opening tracks better than what was once side one of Dixie Chicken. Ideally, buy it with its successor, 'Feats Don't Fail Me Now'.

In the dark days before punk's scorched earth policy, Little Feat were one of the few saving graces. An unassumedly multi-racial band that welded together funk, soul and country, fronted by their leader Lowell George. Unfortunately, Lowell died prematurely and these albums represent the peak of the band's career.

From the comedic title track and 'Fat Man In the Bathtub', the soulful blues of 'On Your Way Down' and 'Two Trains' to the stoned run-out of 'Lafayette Railroad', it doesn't put a foot wrong.

If you like rock with the roll still in it, you won't ... Read More:

Even though song-by-song they may not be the best ever, Little Feat is probably my favourite band of all time, and this is undoubtedly their high point. Just pure joy.

With Little Feat, it was not all about the compositions, but also how those compositions were played. They are/were just awesome musicians, and I don't think a record could be much more groovy than this one.

My favourite songs include Spanish Moon, Skin It Back and especially Rock'n'Roll Doctor. I love the way how they play with reggae rhythms in that one and Lowell George's singing is just, er, orgastic!

This was the last album where Lowell George was still the dominant force, and Bill Payne and Paul Barrere were beginning to emerge as song writers ... Read More:

This was Little Feat's first record and you can hear them assembling all the different elements that would make up their style for years to come:
multiple styles - check, great playing - check, killer songs - check, wierd lyrics - check. While they hadn't got the mix quite right yet, it was almost there and it does contain some classic songs that stayed in the act for many years.

For a start there is the first incarnation of "Willin" with Ry Cooder on guitar - it's not the definitive version which was to appear on "Sailing Shoes" but it is still mighty fine. Cooder also stays on for a medley of Howlin' Wolf songs, some of the toughest, most authentic blues Little Feat ever recorded. There are some beautiful country songs "Truck stop girl" ... Read More:

This was Little Feat's second LP, and for me easily their best, with a selection of killer songs and a great sound. Lowell George was still the main man with the songs rooted in rock, blues and country rather than the jazz of their later albums, which had Bill Payne more to the fore.

'Willin' from the debut release is reworked and unbelievably made even better with a more country feel. The title track is wonderful laid-back melodic gospel blues, with great obscure lyrics. Indeed all the songs have lyrics out of left field, which you can happily sing along with but later you think "Hang on what the hell does that mean?!?"

Bill's contributions here include two unusual songs `Got no shadow' and `Cat fever' and a more straight-forward (apart ... Read More:

As others have said, this may possibly be the best live album ever! I do especially like the extended piano jam on "Dixie Chicken" and the Tower of Power Horns on "Mercenary Territory" and "Day or Night".

By now, the band's leader, Lowell George was steeped in the drug problems that would shortly kill him. The couple of tracks he penned here were from the sessions for the album's predecessor 'The Last Record Album'.

So instead the band's keyboard player, Bill Payne takes the helm. The result is admittedly fine jazz-rock excursions and Eagles-type West Coast rock - but they just don't have the verve of previous albums. Don't get me wrong - this is a fine album in anybody's book. However, the lack of centre from Lowell's creative presence is evident.

The best album Little Feat could have made at this point - and still miles better than any lesser band could manage.

With the addition of vocalist Shawn Murphy, Little Feat are still terrifyingly good. The usual crazed mixture of cajun, rock, blues, ragtime etc. etc. played with the passion and soul of a band that don't need to worry about anything except having enough fun. Get this thing.
