Influence is curious currency. And Lonnie Donegan as a performing artist had bags of it. The Quarrymen became The Beatles and the three chord tricks became British R&B. Whilst skiffle itself was not durable in terms of the public eye it spawned a whole era of music that charts British music history. Mr Donegan then. Here is probably the most comprehensive and best value compilation of the man's material. There are decent alternatives but this collection of Singles (both A-sides and B-sides) does a good job of covering the man's career from the mid-1950s to the mid-late 1960s. Pulse went on and released "Putting on the country style" and repeated several of the tracks on this cd.Why do they do that?And the Rock island line on both cds is not the original Decca hit!its a later re-recording which has something missing from the original.

If its the original stuff your after this is it.2cds crammed with nothing older than 1956.Its even got Lonnie with Chris Barbers Jazz Band "On a christmas day/Take my hand,precious lord".I had this one on a 78.I`m so glad they have concentrated on these earliest recordings,I recommend you get this while its still available.

Like many others who grew up in the 60's I was brought up with a pile of Lonnie 78s and thought he was fantastic (but my Dad didn't think so when I broke his 78 copy of Rock Island Line on the autochanger of our record player! I finally managed to replace it last year) This album is excellent for several reasons - it captures the versions of his classic tracks as he was doing them live right up until his death; it shows a wider side to his music rather than just skiffle; and the version of Alabammy Bound with Van the Man is absolutely fantastic! A welcome addition to any collection of Lonnie albums
