We just didn't realise it at the time, you know. My friends and I were around thirteen at the times of this album's release and had no idea whatsoever of the gay symbolism in both the music and the album's cover. We just thought Lou Reed was the American Bowie. Why, our hero Ziggy was even rumoured to have played the sax fade out on "Walk On The Wild Side". (Bowie didn't actually play the sax, he just contributed backing vocals to the album, while Spiders guitarist Mick Ronson featured more heavily). Bowie's decadence and transexuality was considered fine in the UK, Bowie's fans were largely "lads", amazingly. The same would be true of Queen a year later. Lads also liked Lou Reed. We loved the bass line on "Walk On The Wild Side", the "dodgy" ... Read More:

Written a year after the commercial triumph that was "Transformer" ,Berlin released in 1973 , was viewed at the time by "Rolling Stone "magazine as a suicide note for Lou Reeds, career. "Goodbye Lou" they harrumphed smugly . Now Berlin , one of the most misunderstood albums in rock, is placed at number 344 in the magazines top 500.Like many a great album Berlin has undergone a critical renaissance and nowadays the consensus is that Lou Reed was right when he originally stated that Berlin is his masterpiece
Berlin is a harrowing rock opera about Jim and Caroline , a dysfunctional couple spiralling towards oblivion through drugs, violence and seedy sex. After Caroline has her children taken away by the authorities this is the last straw and she ... Read More:

Only a few years ago each of these remastered cds [3 of which have extra tracks], would have cost around a tenner. Now you can get a tidy box set, with cds housed in neat card sleeves [no gatefold or inner bags unfortunately],for the price of a single album.

If you own the remasters then this is probably surplus to requirements, but if you only own 1 or 2 [ I only had Transformer ] you really cannot go wrong, and although it smacks a little of desperation from BMG /Sony, [after all how many more times can these albums be reissued?], the value and concept should be applauded. My advice would be to snap up the boxes in the series that you want promptly as it my encourage other companies to follow suit.

This is a great deal for the punter ... Read More:

Lou Reed is a man of many things. People say that he's miserable, oyhers say that he's rubbish. Most regard him as one of the foremost inventors of popular culture as it is today. He is inventive and witty and his knowledge of how to write a beautiful song is undoubted. His songs are about real life and a lot of people can't appreciate this fact about the songs that he has written in his illustrious career in rock. The best songs on this album are without doubt Perfect Day and Pale Blue Eyes. The latter been composed for The Velvet Undergrounds self titled third album. The legend goes that anyone who ever heard a Lou Reed composition has gone on to form a band. If that legend is to be believed then just about every band that is recording today has been influenced ... Read More:

How this album receives less than 5 stars from some reviewers is beyond me. But then again, when reading through the 'less-than-5-star'-reviews it becomes obvious that some disagree with the political issues and some even with rock music dealing with current political issues. Well, then... go check out some Offspring then and leave Lou to a more discerning audience ;-)

This album heralded Lou's return to form in 1989 which has so far lasted to this day some 18 years down the line. It's Lou finally hitting the formula again after The Blue Mask in 1982 with a stripped down 4 piece band playing nothing but rock and with lyrics so on the mark that they may leave the victims on the receiving end with a scratch or two... and the rest of us equally belly-laughing ... lou reed is another one of those legendary figures, like james brown, beefheart, zappa etc, who are seemingly beyond criticism and are held up as icons of cool and names to be dropped if youre a serious music fan. the plain facts are, in the cold light of day, these artists were never really as great as the glowing reviews tend to paint them. the velvet underground were an important band for sure but one with only 2 or 3 really worthwhile, cohesive songs. reed too, has a few good songs but the mundane outnumber them. everything he does here is indicative of that. when he rocks, the likes of bowie and iggy did it so much better. when he goes sparse and acoustic cohen and other artists like nick cave and michael gira do it far more convincingly. As a songwriter, his lyrics can also ... Read More:

This second half of 1969 Live isn't quite the tour de force that Volume 1 is - it's slightly patchy by comparison. But its high points are still very high indeed.

Both CDs contain material recorded over a series of concerts in San Francisco in late November/early December 1969 (the majority) with a few tracks from a concert in Dallas a few weeks earlier. But the sound quality from the two sources is so similar that it sounds as if it could all have come from one night.

Ocean first appeared on Lou Reed's debut solo album; the Velvets had recorded several studio versions but the slow, stately 10 minute version here is definitive and thoroughly epic. Pale Blue Eyes actually improves on the superb version on their 3rd album. The version of Heroin here I'm not crazy ... Read More:

Coney Island Baby is ultimately a record-deal-filler album, something to get Lou back on track after the unlistenable Metal Machine Music. Nonetheless, its very good indeed. Lou's vocal style is exactly the same as on Transformer, but instead of Mick Ronson's buzzing glam riffs, we have some impeccable mid-70s session muso backing- a supple, intricate rhythm section and lots of wanky note-bending guitar. It has a real period charm, and the songs are up to the mark. Nothing here quite up to the heights of Walk on the Wild Side, but it comes close. The cute lick which opens Crazy Feeling is infectious, She's My Best Friend is another stand-out, and Gift has a lovely melody as well as showcasing Reed's tongue-in-cheek humour. Kicks, despite its jazzy stylings, tries to explore darker, more ... Read More:

Somewhat maligned, at the time, like the "RNRA" predecessor. Both those albums were deemed to feature "hack heavy metal mutations of his greatest songs". That, i would contend, is a very unfair assessment of both. The treatments of those songs are, obviously, radically different. But they stand up very well, in their own right.

I reckon my original vinyl copy of this one is about played-to-death. So i was mightily relieved to get my hands on an "everlasting" cd version. Now i can blast out that fabulous live version of "Vicious", before leading into "Satellite Of Love". I'm a bit less keen on the live rendition of "Walk On The Wild Side", but the rest of the album doesn't disappoint. "I'm Waiting For The Man" is given a radical rework, whilst "Oh Jim" gets an extended treatment with ... Read More:
