When you combine two of the most charismatic performers in all of jazz history on one album you know that you are on to a winner. This album did not disappoint. Ella's elegant, pristine and polished vocals contrast perfectly with the coarse, thick, rough edged vocals of Louis. I have recently come across an artist called Alison Burns on myspace whose music sounds very similar to that of Ella.

So often "the very best of" albums can be disappointing. That was not the case with this marvellous Satchmo compilation. I have no other albums by this marvellous man and wanted something definitive with everything I'd ever heard of by him in one place. This double CD gave me exactly what I wanted. You only have to look at the track listings to start to smile or feel nostalgic. There are so many truely great songs; classic Satchmo tracks and less well known but equally loved tunes. There are great duets, many of which have a really fresh immediate feel with bits of conversation and banter between the artists as they sing. Loving and giving, what else do we need? Louis Armstrong gives us his audience a lasting feeling of happiness spiced with a momentary disappointment now and then in the muddle we all find us in. What a Wonderful World! And his song is the best song of the last Century.

I bought this on the basis of the reviews and was knocked out by the album.Surely it must rank amongst the very best Louis Armstrong albums.Captivating from start to finish and the music quality is as fresh as tomorrow. Simply can't beleive the price, please don't let it put you off it is worth far far more.

It goes without saying, I trust, that any recording of these two artists performing together is simply wonderful stuff. But I'd like to draw your attention to one track in particular. Stompin' At The Savoy was a rehearsal which the canny producer had the wit to record just in case something good happened. It happened. Backed by The Oscar Peterson Trio, the two singers launched into a jam that beggers belief. It's just astonishing that people can improvise this well. And the greatest pleeasure is that we can hear just how much they're enjoying it while it's happening. Blissful. But every track is a pleasure. I warmly recommend this to you.
