I'm a huge fan of Lucinda and after seeing her in tremendous form at the glasgow barrowlands I went out and got my hands on as much stuff of hers as I could. I must admit I'm a bit disappointed with this cd - maybe it will grow on me but there seem to be few powerful songs here. It's almost as though it has been thrown together to meet contractual obligations.

Lucinda Williams' song Side Of The Road is one of the most extraordinary, beautiful and haunting songs I've ever heard, and some of the tracks on her last CD came very close to that quality in their ability to take you into the heart of somebody else's world with feeling. But for my money there's nothing to touch her best work on World Without Tears. To me the song writing all sounds a bit labored and tired, the delivery and voice uncertain as to what she's aiming for and the quasi-rap just plain wrong for both her voice and the material. I don't care what the other reviewers say, I would advise you give this a miss.

I'm new to this genre and I have got into Miranda Lambert and Gretchen Wilson and although I don't buy his political persuasion, Toby Keith. I bought West and wasn't impressed but Car Wheels is something else. Maybe because I'm new to this brand of music I'm suckered but I really think that this is such a stand out CD that it merits huge praise. I've heard that it was a perfectionist effort - hence the Pet Sounds analogy - and if so it works. Right in Time and Joy -two very different pices are addictive. Maybe this is a one-off in which case play it to death.

Hurt and desire mapped by a country poet. Charlie Sexton sprinkles gorgeous guitar lines like gold dust. Making lazy comparisons with Neil Young or whomever is pointless beacause she really is out there on her own.

Buy this album if only for one track: Sweet Old World. About losing a loved one, presumably to suicide, but not necessarily limited to that, it is almost too sad for words. Its ability to capture musically the ethereal, confused, and single-minded detachment from the world we can feel shortly after losing someone dearest is a mark of great musicianship. But where it is so utterly successful is in realising a lyrical ambition of not expecting the listener to indulge the singer, to share their burden of grief, to help them through the night as it were, which is so often the object of even a great ballad. Lucinda uses her talents to perfection on this one. The songs about loss and lost love make this a true album effort. Learning How To Live digs itself deep into your subconsciousness right away. Wrap My Hand Around That may be a bit streched though. Where Car Wheels could still be classified as Americana, if such classification for Williams mix of folk, blues, rock, and some country is warranted at all, West really finds here on an island by herself. And I'm more than happy to listen to her on my own little reatreats in to good music. Granted, 4.5 stars might be enough. But given the previous reviews I really feel this needs a shot in the arm.

Car Wheels was where my introduction to Lucinda Williams all started.Great to see it being repackaged with a bonus concert disc.Buy this and you will not be dissapointed.More than likely you will be hooked just like i was in 1998.Drunken Angel,Pineola,Metal Firecracker and Lake Charles all briliant pieces of songwriting.The only downside being the money you will need to buy the rest of her lps that you will purchase after this.

Someone recommended this to me so I read these reviews and bought it on spec. I have to say I agree with most people. This is a terrific album that really grows on you. The style sits on the edge of the country music genre where it meets Neil Young and Crazy Horse. I love the guitar work and the guts of the live band. It has become one of my favourite CD's in a very large collection.
