Don Giovanni is perhaps the greatest opera of all and has been very lucky on disc with many fine recordings. This one, however, just about tops the lot. It has Guilini and the Philamonia at the top of their game, a simply wonderful cast with Wachter as the most demonic Don on record, and Legge's superb production. The recording still sounds well though not quite up to the latest digital standards, of course. But it is one of Legge's best. Just listen to the climax with chords thundering and Frick's sepulchral bass summoning Giovanni to hell. If the hairs don't rise on your neck then you can demand your money back!
For a refreshing alternative try Jacobs (HM) but all round this one is the tops.

This really is, in my humble opinion, the definitive performance of this comic opera. All the people involved are excellent. I suppose I am a little biased because the Philharmonia is my favourite symphony orchestra and as is proved on this recording, orchestra, chorus and conductor, Galleria, are superb. The supporting singers, Ollendorf, Zaccaria, Curturan and Carlin are also in fine voice and complement the principals so well. In such a high quality career I don't think Callas has sung better than in this performance. Tito Gobbi, is well, Tito Gobbi, and this is really the definiive Figaro even considering the Prey version. To me though, above all, the performance that sets this apart is that of Luigi Alva as Almaviva. His drunken officer, creepy ... Read More:

Although cut and tampered with and by today's standards grossly
unauthentic this version of Alcina from 1962 remains very
attractive. Joan Sutherland became La Stupenda with this role,
and it is easy to understand why, the beauty and virtuosity of
the voice are breathtaking. She leads a superb cast of than
young singers all at their freshest, Berganza, Sciutti, Freni,
the formidable Monica Sinclair, Luigi Alva and Ezio Flagello.
Richard Bonynge conducts with elegance and the sound is
excellent. Purists are better advised to keep away but admirers
of beautiful voices and music can't go wrong with this set.

A great recording of a fun opera. Its fast furious and funny but never reduces to farse. Berganza is wonderful throughout and her prince, Alva is his usual understated but smooth self.

I think this performance just pips Chailly's recording to the post as the best La Cenerentola available.

This recroding of barbiere is one of the best recordings of the opera. However, no one ever mentions it on lists of the best recordings of the opera. This is just severely unfair.
Gui is a proven Rossinian and his direction here is probably the best on record. De los Angeles is a sweet, lyrical and above all, charming Rosina.
Alva's Almaviva (his second recording of the role) is good. He is in excellent form throughout.
Bruscantini is a superb Figaro. He is so funny that the first time I heard this, I just could not stop laughing. Buy this recording, and you will not be dissapointed.
