Okay, so this isn't Dylan or the Beatles, but it sure is fun. Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album isn't just "the one with 'Free Bird' on it", it's much more than that, one of the original group's best efforts, and quite possibly the best one of the lot. It mixes heartfelt ballads, country, swaggering riff-rockers, and the delightfully silly down-home boogie-rock of "Gimme Three Steps" and "I Ain't The One". I do prefer the slightly tougher (and string-less) live rendition of "Tuesday's Gone" from the "One More From The Road" album, but this one is no throwayay either. And you can't help but love the aforementioned "Gimme Three Steps" and "I Ain't The One", a wonderful blend of self-deprecating "hick" lyrics and gritty guitar riffs. ... Read More:

One of the greatest bands ever, with wonderful songs, melodies, anthems, musicianship. This album is so worth getting for anyone wanting a musical history of the band and some of their best material, but the first six albums from the original line up are all brilliant. Highly recommended.

This CD, whilst a great compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most noted songs, appears to have a manufacturing/recording flaw in it. I have tried a couple of copies of this CD, and both have had the same flaw in it, so it appears every copy has it. In the last 30 seconds of the song "Simple Man", one of Skynyrd's finest in my opinion, the sound suddenly goes strange for about 2 seconds before returning to normal. It's not a jump in the CD, the sound quality just goes strange, and strange is the only word to describe it. As I mentioned, I have purchased more than one copy of this CD as I presumed this flaw would not be in all the copies, but it has been there in all the copies I've purchased, and I've had to return them all. As you can assume from the title (Second Helping) this was Lynyrd Skynyrd's follow-up to "Pronounced..." and I think with that consisting of songs they'd been playing on tour for years, this is a better album. It is full of classics - Sweet Home Alabama, Workin' for MCA, The Ballad of Curtis Loew and Call me the breeze. I don't think that there is one duff moment, if you're into either country rock or any 1970's music you should buy this. The band were on top form and the guitar army (Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Ed King) were the perfect backing to Ronnie Van Zant's vocals. Buy this album and rock!

It`s so horrible to think of Lynyrd Skynyrd recording a Christmas album like they did in 2000. Ronnie, Allen and Steve must have been spinning in their graves. The fact is, and I saw the reformed 1991-version and bought the albums from that time too, that in 1977 these guys were dangerously close to world domination...they had just released the incredible "Street Survivors", which suggested the addition of Steve Gaines would add a another dimension, and also their world tour had left fans worldwide gasping for more. The band consumed so many drugs and so much alcohol that it`s a wonder they ever made it to the stage, but they did, and they were on cracking form at the Fox Theatre back in `76. Apparently created in less than 3 weeks, from start to finish, this is a great album and possibly Skynyrd's best. They worked 16-hour days during that time, their first break in touring for months. However, before it was released, guitarist Ed King had left (or been pushed - depending on who you listen to!), unwilling to put up with the workload any more. However, the superb Artimus Pyle is on drums, making this the strongest lineup to date. I'm amazed how the arrangement on songs like "I'm a Country Boy" and "On the Hunt" are so good - the three guitars all intertwining in that superb Skynyrd fashion - riffs, solos, slide - it's all there. I have the original LP ( does anyone remember Long Playing Records ? ) So I bought the CD.Then the 2 CD version came out, which I bought.The newest version is great, due to the second CD which has the original recording, not released before, plus some extra out-takes & concert recordings from one of Skynyrds last concert recordings before their plane crash. Well worth buying for old, or new fans !

Released to coincide with their induction into the Rock & roll Hall Of Fame, another solid 'Deluxe Edition' release. Included on disc one is the original album plus six additional tracks (four live tracks, an acoutic version of 'All I Can Do...' and an alternate take of 'Double Trouble') - be warned however that three of these six where previously available on 'The Definitive Lynyrd Skynyrd' box set. Disc two as the previous reviewer states is a forty-one minute 'Old Grey Whistle Test' performance from November '75 which is fantastic but, and it is a small but, the vocal mix is a little weak so you need to crank the TV set up to hear what RVZ is saying - although, in truth, it should be cranked to eleven anyway !! All in all a great release, highly recommended.

Although this was the final album recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd before the tragic plane crash in 1977, "Street Survivors" does not disappoint. The band are in fine form & inspired by the addition of Steve Gaines on lead guitar & vocals, who's influence is prominent on much of the record. The material here is superb throughout, with notable rockers, "What's Your Name?", "That Smell", "I Know a Little", & "You Got That Right", which all include classic guitarwork by Allen Collins, Gary Rossington & Gaines. As always, Ronnie VanZant's vocals are a pleasure & Billy Powell gets in some excellent piano solos on "I Know a Little" & the cover, "Honky Tonk Night-Time Man", which has a great drum intro by Artimus Pyle. This album was titled 'Essential' for a reason. It is an essential album for any CD collection. There are other essentials, Meat Loaf's 'Bat ot of Hell', Springsteen's 'Born in the USA', ZZ Top's 'Eliminator', and Queen's 'Greatest Hits I'. (by no means a definitive list). It has 'Alabama', and it has 'Free Bird', and for the more seasoned southern rock fan it also has '3 Steps'. But it has so much more! "Drifter can you make folks cry when you play and sing? Have you paid your dues, can you mourn the blues, can you bend them guitar strings?" asked David Allen Coe. Skynyrd can. Every song tells a story, every one means something.
