I am a great admirer of Maddy prior, not least because to me she represents the true voice of English Folk Music and is not afraid to champion the 'English' song in this day and age of so called correctness. English Folk Music is amongst the best music in the world and this CD is no exception. There are some great melodies here both sung and played so well that it is a joy to listen to. I cannot imagine a world without Maddy's music - with or without Steeleye Span and the Carnival band that she sings with. To me the real gem of this collection is 'Magpie', her own composition which was shelved for over forty years until now and never fails to send a shiver down my spine and a tear to my eye whenever I play it. So I would advise anyone to buy ... Read More:

I've been listening to this every Christmas for the last eighteen years and haven't got tired of it yet. The bouncy, folky style of performing carols is much more to my taste than the more solemn choral recording of carols that you generally get.

This album has a nice mixture of carols, some well-known, some less well-known, some merry and some quiet, but all beautifully performed. I have yet to find another christmas collection that I like better than this one. If this doesn't put you in the mood for Christmas, nothing will.

A re-issue of three albums from 1968-1971: Folk Songs of Olde England Vols. 1 & 2 and Summer Solistice. Just Tim & Maddy on the first two, some extra instrumentalists (Gerry Conway, Andy Irvine...) on the third.

Overlook the dreadful 'Olde' - probably used at the behest of the recording company's marketing department. This is an oustandingly good collection of 39 traditional songs, simply arranged and brilliantly sung (with relatively few embellishments) both by Maddy Prior and Tim Hart.

Dificult to pick favourites - there are so many. I 'll just mention The Dalesman's Litany and Capt. Weddebourn's Courtship as sticking in the mind.

Maddy has long been an important figure in the British folk music scene, whether as lead singer of Steeleye Span, as a solo singer or (as on this album) with The carnival band, who specialise in medieval and other traditional music.
This collection of Christmas music is not a typical Christmas album - it draws heavily on old and largely forgotten songs. The range of instruments used is as unusual as the songs - they even include recorders. I thought recorders were just use to teach children to learn to play an instrument - but here they are.

First the familiar - there are three songs here which will be instantly recognisable to everybody - Away in a manger, Joy to the world and I saw three ships. While shepherds watched is a standard ... Read More:

Fabulous sound, wonderful mix of tracks, music that really sounds like the family singing round the Yule Log. Maddy Prior's voice has never been more sound or reliable. Especially excellent is the first track - but all the tracks are just so singable!! This is mulled wine and open fire music to really set the scene for the festivities, and no collection should be without it.

This is a wonderful album of Charles Wesley's hymns - sung in a folky fashion, most likely much as they were originally sung. So refreshing a change from the usual rendering of church hymns. Very uplifting indeed

This is really, really bad. I know there is a fashion for playing 18th Century music as if everyone is running to catch the trains that will be crossing England in the 19th. There is little evidence for this idea and in the case of this collection of songs it is clearly wrong.
The cover notes tell of the hymns as being seen by their creators and by John Wesley as teaching tools. They are rich in biblical and theological imagery which is meant to be thought about as they are sung. I almost pity Maddy Prior as she races through these . She sings without inflection and without any sense of meaning as the songs whizz by.
You can do better, which makes this even more disappointing. You get half a star for choosing good hymns.

Maddy Prior has made some superb recordings of Christmas Carols with the Carnival Band, but her release of 'Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh' is something a bit different. I bought this for Christmas 2001, so with Christmas 2002 rapidly approaching it's time to listen again.
There are two cycles of songs included on the CD. The first eight songs form 'Gold Frankincense and Myrrh' and were written by Maddy herself, telling the story of the Three Kings/Wise Men. In the first three songs each King tells his story, next they collectively tell of their journey, all to the accompaniment of an amazing array of authentic Arabian and African instruments. Then there is a switch to looking at the story through other eyes. 'Melima' is a woman used by Herod ... Read More:

A great take on traditional Christmas songs, this CD is striking and fun. It is a breath of fresh air and leagues away from the sentimental tripe that pours out of speakers around Christmas. There is a wide breadth of material here - Medieval to Victorian, Calypso and New-Age. The treatments are eclectic and often surprising, but always judged and often very moving. If you've had the pleasure of seeing this troupe live you'll appreciate the CD, if not then get it anyway.
