Listening to the Mammas and the Papas was a real nostalgia trip but how I hate CD's with tracks that fade out before they finish, it totally spoils the experience. I have a vision of a man behind the stage at a live performance turning a big volume control down leaving the group playing and singing silently to a bemused audience. Had the tracks all been full length I would have given this CD 4 stars.

i first came about mama cass through the film "beautiful thing" which used her big hits both solo and with the mamas and papas. Mama has one of them voices..like karen carpenter and eva cassidy..that is pure and amazing and it makes you think what would have become..if theyd lived! i hope you all know the standards and hits "dream a little dream of me" "welcome to the world" "one way ticket" "its getting better"and "make youre own kind of music" if you think they are amazing the rest are just as good..amazing pop songs..amazing lyrics...amazing delivery... it not the hits plus anything else to bring up the track listings..these are amazing tracks!!! they are in the same happy go go lucky mood..the ... "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears," the first album released by the Mamas and the Papas, is clearly the group's best album. "California Dreaming" was rocketing up the charts in the spring of 1966 when this album was released and introduced the crisp harmonies that John Phillips had developed through months of rehearsal in the Virgin Islands and hours of polishing the sound in the recording studio. It is hard to imagine what it must have been like when this sound was new and fresh. Of course, this is the group's best album (hits collections not included) since it has both of their greatest hits, "California Dreaming" and "Monday, Monday." This album features several different backing bands. The first six tracks are with Buddy Guy, with Big Walter Horton on tracks 2 & 5. Tracks 7 & 8 are with Mississippi Fred McDowell, 9-14 are with the Muddy Waters band - yes, Muddy is just a backing musician here! - while the last two are with Edward 'Bee' Houston. Now I have to admit I'm not really a fan of Buddy Guy, and his tracks are the weakest on this CD, in my opinion, but they're still perfectly listenable. As for the rest, they're all absoluely first rate, more than enough for me to give this album a five-star rating.This is a great album, with a variety of styles, but still sufficiently homogenous to listen to it all the way through.
