Listening to the Mammas and the Papas was a real nostalgia trip but how I hate CD's with tracks that fade out before they finish, it totally spoils the experience. I have a vision of a man behind the stage at a live performance turning a big volume control down leaving the group playing and singing silently to a bemused audience. Had the tracks all been full length I would have given this CD 4 stars.

i first came about mama cass through the film "beautiful thing" which used her big hits both solo and with the mamas and papas. Mama has one of them voices..like karen carpenter and eva cassidy..that is pure and amazing and it makes you think what would have become..if theyd lived! i hope you all know the standards and hits "dream a little dream of me" "welcome to the world" "one way ticket" "its getting better"and "make youre own kind of music" if you think they are amazing the rest are just as good..amazing pop songs..amazing lyrics...amazing delivery... it not the hits plus anything else to bring up the track listings..these are amazing tracks!!! they are in the same happy go go lucky mood..the ... This wonderful collection now out on CD is just a dream come true to those of us who listened to the old 'plastic plates'. You will not be disappointed by this wonderful voice and the words of the songs, etc. Great stuff.

Like many 60s artists it's the original compilations that are the ones to get and, re-issued several times over the decades, this remains the Mamas & Papas definitive collection. Featuring just about every track that made them something special, with the minimum of "fillers", it avoids over concentration on Mama Cass' solo output (good as it was) and zeros down on the ecstatic four part harmonies that catapulted them to international success, including difficult to find but essential tracks like "Trip, Stumble & Fall". The end result? A perfectly formed record of why, for a fleeting period, they were up there with the best.

Beautiful Thing is my favourite film in its genre (gay - coming-of-age), and the soundtrack is wonderful. It may be just a compilation of The Mamas And The Papas (also with some original music by John Altman) but if you weren't extremely familiar with their music before seeing Beautiful Thing (I wasn't) it's a sound compilation to have. It wasn't hard for the songs to really grow on me rather quickly since I love that sixties sound (those great chord progressions, choice of instruments, harmonies, etc), and I'm only 35 years old. I'm so pleased Jonathan Harvey (the writer of Beautiful Thing) chose this music for the play/film. He says he was listening to it as he wrote the script and the lyrics and feel of the songs matched what he was ... Read More:

"If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears," the first album released by the Mamas and the Papas, is clearly the group's best album. "California Dreaming" was rocketing up the charts in the spring of 1966 when this album was released and introduced the crisp harmonies that John Phillips had developed through months of rehearsal in the Virgin Islands and hours of polishing the sound in the recording studio. It is hard to imagine what it must have been like when this sound was new and fresh. Of course, this is the group's best album (hits collections not included) since it has both of their greatest hits, "California Dreaming" and "Monday, Monday."
