This eclectic band is now part of the history of music. The songs chosen to feature in this Best Of are perfect, this really does comprise the best of the band. With one exception : Bring The Fire. This fantastic song which used to start their live performances is strangely absent. Nevermind, you can always buy King of Bongo along with it. One thing is sure, if you like music, you cannot pass this up, buy it NOW.

When you listen to Mano Negra's 1991 album "King of Bongo" you are quickly reminded of the French singer Manu Chao, and there is a simple reason for the similarity, namely that Manu Chao was also singer in this multi-cultural band. Despite the similarities there are of course some differences: Manu Chao concentrates on more or less carribbean sounds whereas Mano Negra was influenced by rock and punkrock. It is very interesting to listen to the second title on the CD, "King of Bongo", since its lyrics and melody are the same as in Manu Chao's later worldwide (at least European) hit "Bongo Bong" from his 1998 "Clandestino" album. I've had this on vinyl for years and it still sounds as fresh and exciting now. Everything is here - trad French, latino, rap, ska, rai, punk. It almost defies definition, and it's sung in four different languages. There are no obvious comparisons, but imagine The Clash meeting up with Ruben Gonzalez at a bordello in downtown Marseilles and you'll be somewhere near. Your collection needs this album !!!
