This CD is like a plateful of oysters; delightfully light yet deeply satisfying. Much of Haydn's music conveys a sense of the joy of living, and this disc has it in spades. Hamelin's effortless, filigree-like control of the composer's characterisitc spangle of notes is astonishing, all beautifully captured by a recording of demonstration quality.

I became an admirer of Hamelin having acquired his recording of Brahm's Piano Quartets. His mastery of both composers' music is simply dazzling.

There are some pieces of music that just have to be listened to. The Concerto for Solo Piano by Alkan is one of those pieces. It is an electrifying tour of all that is best about Romantic virtuosic piano music. Here the marvellous playing (how much his hands must have been aching by the 20 minute mark, but you would never know!) and the brilliant CD notes makes for a remarkably accessible combination. I'm not sure that I could have taken on the first movement without the notes which give an overall structural analysis (albeit in a very brief and accessible way). The repeated notes section is something else!!
The second movement is interesting (each of the movements is a 'study' in and of itself, each forming one twelfth of the epic cycle ... Read More:

This is a first rate performance of the Symphony for solo piano (four etudes of Op. 39). Hamelin has an almost unbelevable technique, and you hear EVERY note with clarity and precision. Lewenthal's performance, however, is even more exciting, it is slightly less perfect pianistically, but so much more orgasmic. Hamelin is stunning, Lewenthal is stupifying. Jack Gibbons is a great compromise between the two. The "historic" Ronald Smith is great and illuminating as well. This music is so great it easily withstands several interpretations. I'm keeping all of these recordings. If you like Liszt and Chopin you will love Alkan. MM

Previously I reviewed the Earl Wild recording of the Scharwenka Piano Concerto No 1, and said that his performance was unbeatable. Perhaps this newer recording doesn't beat Wild's performance, but oh my, it fully equals it!

Everything about this CD is of sumptuous quality: Sleeve notes, performace, recorded sound.

This is a serious rival to Wild in the Scharwenka, and to anyone in the Paderewski.

I can't believe that only a month ago I didn't know Marc Andre Hamelin. I have been listening to classical music seriously for 6 years (i'm 24). I've went through most of the recordings of all the great pianists of the beginning of the century - Rubinstein, Richter, Hoffmann, Gilels, Gould... you name them - everyone. A couple of months ago I picked up a disc by Pletnev (in carnegie hall), and became convinced that Pletnev is the most serious (though boring) pianist today (well, I like Schiff too). But I was disappointed that there is no pianist of the scale of Hofmmann or Richter or Gould living today. There will never be another Gould, and never another Hofmann, but when I heard for the first time Hamelin's Kaleidoscope, I was overjoyed.

Along with Schubert and Brahms, Chopin for me represents the high point of Romantic music. The enormous variety of music that he wrote still astounds me, but until recently I had not bothered to listen to the etudes closely. Only after I bought this CD (on the strength of the excellent reviews) did I delve into Chopin's opus 10 and 25 sets. I'm glad I did.

After listening to the Etudes in their original form one by one and then listening to Godowsky's recastings of them, I felt renewed enthusiasm for the great Polish/French composer. I also sat back astounded and respectufl at what Godowsky was able to do with them. He doesn't veer far away from Chopin's originals; there are certainly more notes but this doesn't get in the way at all. The ... Read More:

I happened upon this CD because I knew some of Marc-Andre Hamelin's Sorabji recordings and knew that he concentrated on virtuosic repertoire. Rzewski was new to me, but even on a first listen it was abvious that this series of variations for solo piano is a substantial addition to the piano repertoire. Although no one would mistake it for a nineteenth century piece, it is far from avant garde and there is plenty here that links it to the main canon of such works.

Stylistically "The People United ..." embraces many different styles, so it is arguable that a genuine "Rzewski" voice is difficult to identify, but the distinctive nature of the Theme, together with the ingenuity of scoring, results in a work that has more coherence and variety than ... 9.Alkan/Henselt: Piano Concertos from: Hyperion
July 01, 1994
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Alkan/Henselt: Piano Concertos
Neither Henselt nor Alkan are particularly well known, but both were excellent pianists, wrote exceptionally difficult music and had the misfortune to be overshadowed by their more illustrious contemporaries, namely Chopin and Liszt. The two works by Alkan are more like concertinos than concertos and tend towards the style of Mendelssohn and Weber. They are technically difficult, but Marc-Andre Hamelin is more than up to the task. Henselt's concerto is a real 'hum-dinger' of a piece and is the complete antithesis of (say) a Mozart concerto in that the piano is not playing 'in concert' with the orchestra. This is an out-and-out battle, a fight to the death, with the forces of the orchestra on one side opposing the piano on the other. It is a very exciting, ... Read More:

This is the ultimate alkan cd. Anyone wanting an introduction to his wonderful oeuvre should look no further. This is actually pretty much my favourite cd of all. I am a fan of all types of music, but i would say that fans of more aggressive and thrillingly dramatic music would be the ones to enjoy this the most. Extremely alive, emotional, dramatic , exciting , and diverse. THIS IS ALKAN!
