This is a great performance of Wagner's last opera (gesamtkunstwerk, buhnenweihfestspiel or whatever you want to call it). Maybe it doesn't quite sweep the board as comprehensively as his roughly contemporaneous Ring, but Krauss does present a wonderfully vivid, dramatic, somewhat lighter alternative to the Knappertsbusch approach. Indeed the cast on this recording, with one notable exception, are essentially the same as on the famous Kna re-opening Festival performance of two years earlier. Here again we have Weber's deeply committed and vastly experienced Gurnemanz, Modl's searing, blistering Kundry, London's profoundly anguished Amfortas, and Uhde's fascinatingly corrupted scary Klingsor. That one exception is the Parsifal of Ramon Vinay. ... Read More:

This is the 9th complete recording of the Ring I have obtained and I'm starting to think that it might be the finest I own. The sound quality for an early 1950s recording is remarkable - much closer to the Furtwangler studio recording of Die Walkure than any other live recording I have come across from the time. What makes this recording so special is that it contains so many great Wagner singers at the peak of their powers and that Krauss' interpretation of the score is so immediate.

Hans Hotter's Wotan is sublime, his voice much fresher and clearer than in subsequent recordings - in particular the Solti one. Ramon Vinay might be the definitive Siegmund for me - his baritonal heldentenor brings out the heroic qualities of the character ... Read More:

In this long awaited second album from the daugther of the "diva" Ellis Regina all the tracks are worth listening to again and again. After the huge sucess of her first album the young woman that keeps saying that her long departed mother is irreplaceble joins with several of the most famous brazilian composers - including her elder brother Marcelo - to bring us an unforgettable experience: her voice echoes the tone of that of her mother's but is unique and carachteristic; the choice of songs is wonderful, joining brazilian rythms with other latin influences (Buena Vista Social Club seems to continue to influence Maria Rita) and blues and jazz nuances.

For those who understand Portuguese the lyrics are superb and an wonderfull theme for reflection and are ... Read More:

I bought this recording on the strength of other recordings I had heard from this label. However, I was disappointed. The age of the recording really does show. I am aware that it has been remastered but somehow the sound is still fighting its way through some foreground noise, exactly what I am not sure. It lacks the clarity I have heard from other recordings, like the superb Gardiner effort. Possibly it was the style 30 years ago, but I also thought that the singing, particularly the showcase arias of the queen, were ruined by the sort of coy vibrarto that one associates with 40s music hall. This is considered a classic recording, but I found the whole production laboured. For those of you out there who have yet to buy a copy of the magic flute I recommend buying ... Read More:

This marvellous Mozart opera, with possibly only one "dud" number in it and a vaudeville finale, seems to have been in production in many recording studios in the 1950s. In Vienna a recording was in charge of Josef Krips, in London Beecham was preparing his inimitable version, and in Berlin Ferenc Fricsay was the conductor in this DGG recording. Each recording has been reissued and remastered, and of them all I have come to prefer this one.

While Fricsay's direction has many strengths and almost no weaknesses, and while the cast has no weaknesses at all, it is principally the quality of the recording and the remastering that wins me over. The clarity and glow on the sound spectrum is outstanding for a recording of 1954 vintage. I admit that the voices ... Read More:
