I have often listened to church music thinking to myself is it all manifested in the same place and released under different titles? However this selection 'hits the spot' with some great renditions of worshipful music and if you like to listen to part singing then cd 1 is excellent. There also some lovely descants some of which i had not heard before, an inspiring selection. Excellent.

This series, produced by EMI in the days of LPs, is one of the great achievements of the gramophone - they rightfully belong up there with the Decca Ring, the EMI Callas series, and any other candidates you care to name. Together they provide a truly comprehensive survey of singing right through the age of recording up to the early days of the LP. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, only Volumes 3 & 4 have appeared on CD - the very earliest era of recording and the period up to the introduction of electrical recording methods that were originally on Volumes 1 and 2 really deserve to be heard again.

Volume 3, the collection under discussion here, covers the period from 1926-1939. This was a veritable Golden Age of Singing ... Read More:

You really can't lose either way if you buy this box set. For those used to the EMI/DECCA recordings of the 60s it is a real treat to hear this new take on some old classics, and for collectors coming to this music for the first time, these discs immediately bring the wit and invention of this great partnership to life.

The musicianship of the soloists and orchestra are first rate on every disc [there are 5 of them]. You may consider the D'Oyly Carte recordings to be definitive because they were mainly recorded after a lengthy run of stage performances, but when you have Royal Opera House soloists being accompanied by a top class orchestra and chorus, you really can't go far wrong. Listen to Richard Suart as the Major General in ... Read More:

It's great to have a professional recording of this sadly neglected work. There are some exciting moments in it - the Prologue is terrific forexample. However, as other reviewers have noted, there is also a lot ofslow music! Following from the score, I was mystified on more than oneoccasion as to why certain sections were so slow. The tempo markings oftensuggested a quicker speed than I was hearing - allegro played andante andso on. I know this is just a question of interpretation, but I feel thatin a number of places, the tempo needs cranking up a bit! One thing thisoratorio cannot cope with is a languid pace, and that for me is the onlydownside of this CD.
That apart, the soloists, chorus and orchestra are excellent, and therecording ... Read More:

That Sullivan's non-Gilbertian work is now receiving something more like its fair share of attention is a most welcome development. Many hitherto little-known works have proved to be fully worthy of the Sullivan we know, and a few (most notably, perhaps, The Golden Legend) have added a whole new dimension to our appreciation of his ability. Unfortunately, The Prodigal Son is not in this category: in fact, it is a major disappointment. The opening and the closing choruses are excellent, as is the lively choral fugue "Oh that men would therfore praise the Lord"; but little else carries much distinction, and some sections are frankly poor. This early oratorio is of little more than academic interest (Sullivan's next work in the genre, The ... Read More:

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, ... Read More:
