You cannot fit all of Marvin's hits on a single CD but this collection has most of the essentials. From a British perspective, one advantage that this has over the double CD (Very best of, which was compiled in America but released in both the UK and USA) is that it includes three UK top ten hits that are not on the double CD, these being Onion song (supposedly with Tammi Terrell, though Tammi was too ill to record the song and a sound-alike substituted), You are everything (with Diana Ross) and Abraham Martin and John (which was an American hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, not Marvin Gaye).

There is no room on this CD to explore Marvin's career in depth, but it does contain all his important British hits (some minor hits ... Read More:

This album blew my mind when I first heard it 15 years or so ago. From the first to the last this album reaches the pinnacles that other artists just cannot. To think that it is over 30 years old to me it sounds fresher and more vital than most of the bland R&B that is being offered up today. Also it's political message still blows me away.

This album is so good that everyone should own it. Infact if you know someone who doesn't get them a copy. It would count as a genuine act of kindness on your part.

It's just a shame he's not still with us.

Often, when listening to Marvin, I get a lump in my throat. This is knowing how he spent his last few years, and how his life was eventually ended. However, it's also the fragility of his voice. By this I don't mean his voice wasn't strong or good. However some songs, including many on this album, display a vulnerability. Dusty was the same - some of her ballads displayed the same fragility and vulnerability. Sadly, Johnny Cash's last recordings were the same, but for different reasons. All were and are (on record, anyway) great artists, and deserve all their accolades.

I know that some people don't like 'greatest hits' albums for one reason or another. However this particular one is superb, it's a must have. All his best hits cramed onto two discs accompanied with some bonus live tracks and previously unrealeased recordings. For example 'Where are we Going' is execllent and speaks on so many different levels. 'The Very Best of Marvin Gaye' is perfect for any newcomers to his music, aswell as those who just wish to add to their Marvin Gaye collection.

I love this album sooo much!!!I am a huge, huge fan and I brought this album after watching the Marvin Gaye DVD, 'Live in Amsterdam: 1976' a few years ago. He gave a live performance of 'All the Way 'Round' and I just fell in love with the song so I decided to buy the whole album and I was not dissapointed. The album has been put onto my ipod and has been played constantly!!Marvin is at his sensual best and its just a very smooth and chilled album. I know its classed as a lovers album but I just enjoy playing it when I want to relax as the songs are very mellow.I love 'All the Way Round', 'Since I had You' and 'I Want You' the most but all the songs have their charm. I actually think its stronger then the 'Lets Get It On' album which I think is ... Read More:

Much has been written about the original release and I share the view that it truly is one of the great albums; transcending both time and genre.
What the reviews here fail to mention are the treasures to be found within the live recording from The Kennedy Center. Close listening to this concert reveals moments of utter beauty. The slowed moments referred to by other reviewers enhance the depth of feeling and this can be felt too in the reactions of the audience who respond rapturously to Gaye's heartfelt improvisations, backed perfectly by some wonderful playing by the supporting musicians. The recording may indeed lack the polish of the studio release but its extremes of intensity and subtlety in performance showcase a true genius at the ... Marvin's spoken intro to the title track sums up the purpose of this set. Made to fund his divorce from Anna Gordy, Gaye had originally planned a quickly recorded album, low on quality, to spite his one time muse, since the judge had written the order into the divorce settlement. The original critical response to "Here My Dear" seemed to reinforce that view, as Gaye's popularity waned spectacularly in the late 70's. Indeed, it had been an incredible fall from the heights of the "What's Going On" era.

Marvin Gaye's problems with his public persona have been well documented by David Ritz, his friend and biographer. It was Ritz who identified the 2 sides of Marvins' personality and it was Ritz who persuaded him to return to performing in 1982. ... Read More:

I have always loved this album ever since I first purchased it in the late 70's( it was released in 1973.)The extra tracks on this new package just add to the brilliance of the album. Although Marvin's voice is stronger than Ms. Ross's, it still works and sounds great. The outstanding tracks are - Stop,Look,Listen, You are Everything, My Mistake was to Love You and Love Twins.Although all the tracks are great a great album to do the housework to.

Very catchy songs, some romantic others more soulful.

Of all the women he sang with (Diana Ross, Kim Weston etc), Marvin seemed most at ease with Tammi. (although they didn't always record their parts live in the studio together & some songs don't actually feature Tammi's voice at all!)

This CD contains all their hits plus some lesser known & diferrent versions of the hits.

You may be surprised how many you recognise!

Standout tracks for me include Ain't No Mountain High Enough, If This World Were Mine, You Ain't Living Until Your Lovin and The Onion SOng.

Well worth buying if you like romantic songs well sung.

The late Marvin Gaye remains one of the most definitive male voices in Soul music. He truly was an utter genius and had such a creative and artistic flair. He remains one of the key influences with todays new generation of wannabe Soul/R&B singers.

In October 1982, Marvin released his first (and his last) studio album for CBS Records, after fleeing from Motown Records in a bid, much like Diana Ross' exact reasons for escaping Motown, for wanting to exert total control over his career, an exercise he was most certainly capable of. The album would be the classic, Midnight Love, which though offered no social commentary or made any sort of profound political statement like much of his previous efforts had, it still stands as a compelling, solid production ...
