Music : The Calling
Ms Chapin Carpenter's music is an elusive and deceptive creature.
On the face of it she has always been a singer/songwriter whose album
releases have an enduring, predictable and reassuring quality.
Somehow one always seems to come along just when you need it.

So here we have her ninth offering (not counting the 'Party Doll' and
'Essential' compilations) and the word 'Essential' does indeed
have meaning here.

Her warm, tonally sound, rock-solid mezzo and guitar carry these
thirteen fine songs with good grace, refinement and consistantly
convincing understatement.

An excellent compilation of Mary Chapin Carpenter's songs and music.
All the songs are good but there is a track here that is one of the best country songs I have heard - " Don't Be Late For Your Life."
It is just such a beautiful song!

"Why walk when you can fly?" Mary Chapin Carpenter asks on the first track of Stones in the Road.I often can't walk after tapping my toes to country music but I had no problem walking after listening to this cd because the songs here aren't so much toe-tappers as ballads that soothe even when the lyrics speak of heartache and pain.Mary has a great voice - it's soft and clear and tells a lively story. The music on these tracks isn't showy and is just there to accompany her voice. This is the best country cd I have heard in my life - I liked every single song on it and would recommend it to people who don't usually listen to country.

I have to admit that what prompted me to write this short review were several of the already existing reviews found here.It seems that people who try to compare this cd with e.g.'Come On,Come On'are really missing the point. There are over 10 years between these two offerings, and in that time,Mary, like all of us, has grown a few years. She now lives a quieter life out in rural Virginia, where she now reflects on life from middle age.The second song 'Simple Life' says it all ! I immediately took to this cd,and was struck by the maturity and the thoughtful nature of many of the songs,of which the opener 'Whenever You're Ready' is my favourite, along with 'This is me Leaving You','Alone but not Lonely',along with the superb closer 'Late for your Life'.

8.Between Here and Gone by: Mary Chapin Carpenter
April 26, 2004
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Between Here and Gone
'Between Here and Gone' is a song cycle united thematically and musically. These literate meditations on the human condition explore through the lens of ordinary lives, love, loneliness and loss, the passage of time, mortality and the afterlife, the search for meaning and the pull of the road. The songs are beautifully arranged and played. Everything is tasteful, and there's no doubt that the album repays repeated listening. That said, taken as a whole, the album is rather one paced, and would have benefitted from one or two more obvious hooks and stepping up a gear occasionally.

Music : A Place in the World
As another reviewer has commented, MCC is trying very hard on this album to fit her words to music, something she usually has no problem with. Here it doesn't quite work and familar themes are trotted out - "Her In My Hometown", "What If We Went To Italy" - but without the love, the emotion and the downright heartbreak of some of her earlier (and indeed, later, work). The lyrics do not sit easily on the melodies here. It is all pleasant enough, but the telling thing is, for me, that this is the one MCC album I rarely play. There is not a song on here one would consider up there with her best, and, believe me, there are many contenders on other albums.

That is all I can say, really. There are six better offerings from Ms.Carpenter to choose before this one.
