This album demonstrates many of the influences Metallica have had over the years. Every song is quite different to the one before yet all remain very appealing and enjoyable. It seems Metallica have rediscovered the right mix of melody, aggression and funk after their last few disappointing efforts. Some of the influences I can pick up on are: Iron Maiden, John 5, Slayer, Pantera and perhaps even a little bit of Marty Friedman. Favourite song? Cyanide In summary, a brilliant album of very different tunes but all capturing the imagination of the listener. Thoroughly recommended - 5 Star!

With well over a hundred reviews for this album, why should I add another? There is nothing more to be said other than 1) When they next get together to get another series of 'Classic Albums - The Making Of' DVD's, this should definitely be one of them, and 2) Every 'serious' rock fan's collection should have this album, it is absolutely essential!! Say No More!!

Widely thought of now as Metallica's masterpiece............but not by me. Still, this is a terrific album, furious, ferocious and chock full of the huge riffery, solos and downright Metal-ness that, by that point in time, people expected from the 4 piece. It has a sadness too though that this was Cliff Burton's last album before his untimely death. But for me there is a lingering problem with 'Master' - some of the songs are overlong! I know that sounds silly, but 'Leper Messiah' is the worst example, an overlong jam, with not a lot musically going on, apart from an 11th hour time change that is good, but too little too late. The other is 'Orion' This might offend people because it's been the 'signature' theme to the Metallica videos where footage ... Read More:

In my opinion And Justice For All is the album where Metallica shifted direction into what can best be described as hard progressive rock. If you want to enjoy the best of the band buy the first three albums, after that the song writing and music gets a little tedious and long-gone are the great riffs and tight songs of the earlier material. It's not that bad an effort, but really only an essential purchase for hardcore fans.

What strikes me is how fresh this album still sounds after over 25 years. Fast, furious and different, I was only 7 when this came out, so can only imagine just how much this must've rocked the Bay Area scene in San Francisco. It does wear it's influences on it's sleeve, but Metallica were still teenagers when they recorded it (imagine any band today managing the same feat?) and you cannot help but be swept away by the enthusiasm behind the record. It pumps out of every one of James Hetfield's riffs, Kirk's solos (yes Megadeth fans, Kirk's, Dave may still be pissed off and claim Hammet stole all his solos, but c'mon, how much can you memorise without sounding imitation - Kirk shows true original talent) and Lars' drums (although he does sound a bitty amateur on this ... It's one of those things that, when you first think about it, it really doesn't and shouldn't work. Ever. But after coming across this album's version of "Nothing Else Matters" on Kerrang! TV, I was shocked and also intrigued by what else the album may have in store. Now, most people know Metallica as one of the most influencial and outstanding metal bands of all-time, so when fans heard that they would be combining themselves with the San Francisco Symphony, as you can imagine, assumptions were made before they music was even heard. This is one of the most beautifully constructed albums that I have ever heard, and the fact that it is a live recording just adds to the charm of it all.
