One guy came to me one day and said "listen to that one buddy, it's pretty cool". It was in 1993, and most people had never heard about this band in europe, including myself. And it was the great shock. It takes only a few seconds to realize what a masterpiece you have. This kind of thing happens rarely. Such an incredible voice, and this powerful, wild sound, coming from "elsewhere"... They reinvented rock & roll, and they did not joke! Beds are burning was this kind of song that could appeal to almost everyone, from the hard rock purist to the radio amateur. The melody itself is eternal. Essential political rock from the 80s and 90s, Midnight Oil remain a shining beacon in a superficial world... most of the old favourites are included in this collection - Blue Sky Mine, Forgotten Years and the wonderful Truganini... as well as (naturally) their most famous track - 'Beds are Burning'. You don't have to be an Aussie to get the broader political messages relating to land and native rights, but even without the politics, this is great rock music.

Midnight Oil had obviously heard of the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Well the previous album to Blue Sky Mine (Diesel And Dust) certainly wasn't broke so the Oil's never fixed it. They stuck with the same formula of foot-tapping rockers to haunting ballads, all with a healthy slice of moral thrown in for good measure. The opening track, Blue Sky Mine sets the tone for the album. Catchy, rocky without being overpowering and if you want to hear the message that the song delivers then it's there for you to explore; if you just want to be entertained without using your brain, then it is equally good at doing that too. Superb, faultless, a gem. I love this album and its difficult to pick a favourite as they are all excellent. On the whole its a little more laid back even pastoral with a few heavier tracks to remind you of past albums. My County stands out so does the infamous Truganini. Its equal to Diesel and Dust and its a shame they never really kept up the "power and the Passion" on later albums.

This is a superb 5.1 offering but please be aware that this is not a DVD-Audio title. It is a DTS-CD. The difference is vast - DVD-A is not data reduced - the mix is lossless, and what you hear is exactly what you would have heard in the studio with DVD-A. With DTS-CD - good as it is - the data has been lossy-encoded which means data was thrown away. You must have a DTS decoder to be able to play this title.

Been an Oils fan since there beginning in the late 70's. Ok so i own the original but the purchase was solely for the Black Fella White Fella DVD. One important note though (well on the one i received anyhow) The DVD is in NTSC format not PAL as I was expecting. Lucily the DVD player handles both or it would have been returned.

For a band that were around for the best part of 30 years, it's incredible that Sydney based political-rockers, Midnight Oil, weren't better known in this country. During their time together, they released some fine albums and, although hardly essential, this compilation is a decent representation of the band's harder-edged output prior to 1987s "Beds Are Burning", the track they are probably best known for in the UK. Only 4 of the titles here ("Redneck Wonderland", "Tell Me The Truth", "Mosquito March" & "Say Your Prayers") are taken from later albums. A suitable partner to the equally fine "20,000 Watt R.S.L.", this collection consists mainly of album tracks and only 3 songs appear on both ("Don't Wanna Be The One", "Dreamworld" & "Hercules"). ... This is basically a live, acoustic set of old material bolstered by 3 new band compositions "Say Your Prayers", "Spirit Of The Age" and "Last Of The Diggers" plus a cover version of Johnny Young's "The Real Thing" (all studio recordings). There is a real intimacy and warmth to the "unplugged" tracks and it is a real pleasure to hear these songs performed in this manner. The band sound as if they are totally at ease and enjoying themselves. If you are already a fan, you may find this a worthwhile addition to your collection but anyone else would be advised to check out "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1" or "Diesel And Dust"...the latter now available as a remaster with a bonus DVD.
