Depend who this is supposed to be essential do-the newcomer to the Urban blues which influenced the British blues bands or essential as the biggest songs are here.Big via other people not especially Muddy who I don't think troubled the pop charts.
Which is besides the point-the pop charts are only a mirror to public taste.
In the U K Muddy waters was represnted in the 50s by a solitary EP which retailed at the same price as Cliff Richard or Elvis so it died a death and was only there because Decca were licensing product from Chess having only just obttained the catalog.
Muddy Waters was also a very unlikely artist to aim his music at the charts for the simple reason that while he may have introduced Chuck Berry to Chess he ... Read More:

This is truly a must-have for anyone interested in Muddy or the blues and why it took off in the way that it did. These awesome recordings give a great insight into what blues are and even seem strangley familiar after the years of listening to Clapton and the Rolling Stones, themselves having been influenced so strongly by Muddy. This is where it all really took off, with Muddy's slide playing ringing out so clearly above his emotion filled, thoughtful lyrics. Must-have!

I like the blues, I like the electric '50s Chess blues a lot and I like what people like Johnny Winter did with the blues in the '60s (I am thinking Second Winter here) and I really do like this album.

It is everything the other reviewers have said, it has wah-wah, fuzz bass, weirded out stuff and it has Muddy. It is also an album that is really very 1960s, possibly a bit hard for a purist but for a rock audience it works just fine.

With hindsight it works ever better, I think. If you think about what the likes of Sly Stone, Hendrix, Cream, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, Mountain and others were doing with the blues and R'n'B tradition then this album really does make sense. Bearing in mind where ... Read More:

I bought this album when it came out and I still can't hear it enough! Muddy Waters was a true great, of course, and so much of what he has done is cherishable, but this one with it's band of great blues artists and the new sound that Johnny Winter put together for them is just so outrageously, raucously contemporary (it still sounds that way after all these years) ... . Buy this one and buy it's true companion (Johnny Winter's "Nothin but the blues") now!

Chess records only recorded Howlin' Wolf live a single time, and late in his career at that, and the label's other main attractions never got a live album. But Muddy Waters was luckier, and this 1971 album was the third full-length concert recording of his career.

Cut in the summer of 1971 at Mr. Kelly's, a Chicago club on the Near North Side, "Muddy Waters Live (at Mr. Kelly's)" finds Muddy in fine form, working with his excellent early-70s band which included Joe "Pinetop" Perkins (piano), drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, bassist Calvin "Fuzz" Jones, and guitarists Samuel Lawhorn and James "Pee Wee" Madison. James Cotton blows the harp on three songs, but on the remaining nine songs it is 21-year-old Paul Oscher playing the excellent, ... Read More:

Three concerts here, the legendary (I presume) Newport Jazz Festival 1960, Copenhagen 1968 and Molde, Norway 1977.

Newport features Otis Spann, Pat Hare, James Cotton, Andrew Stephenson and Francis Clay in glorious black and white and reduced sound quality - but they swing. So much so they are joined by a bunch of others including a brief but memorable vocal by Betty Jeanette along with Jimmy Rushing and a bunch of others. The thing here is they are having fun, big fun, with Muddy a little younger and letting his hair down on stage. The set is far too brief though.

Copenhagen is in colour with slightly better but still disappointing sound, with Spann, Pee Wee Madisson, S P Leary, Luther "Snake" Johnson and Sonny Wimberley. Eight ... Read More:

This was recorded at the Warsaw Jazz Jamboree in Poland during his 1976 European tour. The band, besides Muddy on guitar and singing, consisted of Luther "Guitar Jr" Johnson and Bob Margolin on guitars, Jerry Portnoy on harmonica, Pinetop Perkins on piano; Calvin Jones on bass and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith playing drums.

This collection of songs is a real must for anyone who's interested in learning more about the origins of popular music. When listening to these tacks you can't help but feel that this is where it all started. The Beatles, the Stones, Clapton - they'd all be nowhere if it wasn't for the likes of Muddy.

Every track is a gem. There really isn't a weakness on this record. You're taken on a journey from the softer, more primitive recordings from Muddy's career through to the much heavier, meatier tunes like 'Hoochie Coochie Man'. Songs like this just ooze this aura of coolness that you just can't find in today's music. Muddy is a much neglected artist. Get this record now.

After 27 years recording for Chess Records, this April 1975 album was Muddy's last for the label - and I think it's a bit of a forgotten gem.

PAUL BUTTERFIELD provides fabulous bluesy Harmonica throughout, PINETOP PERKINS plays piano (guest vocals also on "Kansas City" & "Caldonia") with both GARTH HUDSON and LEVON HELM of THE BAND throwing in Keyboards/Accordion and Drums/Bass respectively. While it's a straight-up blues album for the most part, Hudson's Accordion playing gives some of the tracks a slightly swing/Cajun feel - and is a genuine surprise and treat for it too. Special mention should also go to Butterfield's harmonica playing, which is fantastic throughout - clearly enthused by the mere proximity of the great blues man! In fact you ... Read More:

Hip-O-Select are a specialist division of Universal Music. Unlike its parent company, it sells directly to customers from its website, but increasingly companies like Amazon have sold Hip-O-Select's releases from their own website. This has been good news for UK customers in particular, as we are one of the few countries that cannot order directly from the Hip-O-Select website. If you are interested in Soul/R&B and Blues from the 50's and 60's the company's cd's are going to be right up your street. The releases are usually rare and out of print LP's or double cd's full of unissued masters. The company has released a number of Lost and Found cd's for Motown (Four Tops, Supremes and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) and also the comprehensive Complete Motown Singles Box sets. The ...
