I bought Five Leaves Left after a chance encounter with 'Cello Song in 2004. Like everything by this man, it is a great song but the least of what I found on this wonderful album. My first impression was that Nick had a similar vocal style to Colin Blunstone, but after listening to the complete album I concluded that neither Nick's vocal style or his music owed anything to anybody. The music is essentially accoustic based ballads, if you can call these songs ballads; they are slow and beautiful yes, but filled with the lost chord of another existence entirely.

This was his debut album, yet it presents an artist at the height of his powers. Words like enchanting or mesmerizing only partly tell the story. When I listen to ... Read More:

I'll be brief as I'm still getting into the album, but what an album this is. I bought Five Leaves Left years ago on my crusade to pick up as many of Channel 4's top 100 albums as I could, though I only actually became familiar with it this summer, during which time I developed a serious appreciation for the young man's unique voice and those baffling guitar fingerings. After a surprise playing of "Hazey Jane II" on Radio 2 one Friday, I was reminded of my Nick Drake quest and quickly bought Bryter Layter on Thursday last. This is the first album in a long, long time that's had me hooked from the first spin. I actually put my hand on my forehead at one stage, amazed as I was at the standard of music therein. I was hesitant at first to listen to ... Read More:

I'll keep this review relatively short, and hopefully it'll be of use to anyone considering buying Pink Moon, Nick Drake's 3rd album.

What this album has to offer is something between Nick Drake's other 2 albums. Pink Moon isn't as upbeat and jazzy as his 2nd album Bryter Layter, but then again it isn't as depressing and gloomy as Five Leaves Left. Even if it does comprise just Nick and his guitar on all but the opening (title) track, Pink Moon doesn't necessarily leave you feeling depressed. And that's because a lot of the tracks on the album basically aren't gloomy.
For example, "Pink Moon" (Track 1) might take a while to get into, but it's not a sad song at all. Neither are songs like Road, Which Will or Free Ride. The only song on the ... Read More:

Nick Drake's been with me since I found Northern Sky on El Pea. I like Pink Moon best but those scumbags from Volkswagen and Brad Pitt ruined it for me. The strings don't do it for me like they did for Arthur Lee. Plus Joe Boyd's arrogance, decrying the fact that he named his production company after a Donovan record. Donovan is up there with the greats as far as I'm concerned, what does Joe Boyd know? Then I read about what a pothead Nick Drake was and I always equate heavy drug use with stuffing feelings back down. It disappointed me. ANYWAY, I thought I'd left him behind till I bought this on a whim off some Arfur-esque character on Ebay who sent me a tatty copy of this CD and I spent this morning in the company of this lovely lovely man. What a magic CD! Like ... Read More:

Indispensible really for anyone who owns the trilogy of Drake albums released in his lifetime. Features some great tracks that presumably Nick would have been happy to release - Rider on the Wheel (one slight vocal fluff), Time of No Reply, Black Eyed Dog, Magic and his final recording Tow the Line - the only one not available before in some form. They feature his great guitar playing, distinctive voice and enigmatic poetic lyrics and on the whimsical Magic , the gorgeous but, perhaps, excessive orchestration, more subtly done on Way to Blue. Black Eyed Dog is extremely moving in the context, the darkest of blues. Other tracks are weaker songs eg Joey, Mayfair or the painfully strained Hanging on a Star, or alternative versions - Three Hours, Thoughts of Mary Jane and River Man, ... Read More:

Nick Drakes music is sublime but you probably know that already.
The best way of hearing great music in the home is via top quality vinyl through a top quality system. Sadly, however, this shoddy vinyl release misses the mark completely. This vinyl edition is far from audiophile.
There is excessive surface noise and the sound lacks clarity. Do not buy this, buy the new 200g Japanese editions of 5 Leaves Left or Bryter Later as they sound fantastic. Even the CD edition of Treasury sounds better than this!

I first heard Nick Drake in 1969 on a friend's portable record player - maybe it was even a Dansette. I Immediately connected - his timbre matched mine, but his guitar was way out there! Maybe the roll-ups helped - but we waited eagerly for his next release -and his next . . . and then? After that, nothing - rien, nada, niente! What a blow! I wept buckets the day Nick died - along with, maybe 200 other fans! At the time of "Bryter Layter" I was working for ZigZag magazine and Connor McKnight, the editor, was transfixed, and wrote maybe what was the first really in-depth article. We tried, in vain, to contact Nick, without success . . . but, hopefully Connor's article helped - maybe Island managed to sell another couple of hundred copies.
Since then, I've bought all the re-issues. This ... Read More:

Music : Way to Blue: An introduction to Nick Drake
I don't own this CD any more purely because I went out and bought the full back catalogue. Absolutely can't fault the music here - if you want to investigate the music of Nick Drake, then here's your starting point (it was mine). It took quite a while me to 'get it', I would just pop this on now and again when chilling out. The gap between the now-and-agains became smaller and I became addicted. Its nothing now for me to listen to all 3 of his main albums back to back (only 90mins or so). There is so much great music therein and 'Way To Blue' gives you a great start. You may (like me) need to persist with this but there are rewards.
BTW - the production values still stand up - well-recorded crisp acoustic playing, intimate vocals, marvellous orchestration from Robert Kirby and some fine guest ... Read More:

9.Time of No Reply by: Nick Drake

My favourite tracks on this posthumous compilation include the title track, I Was Made To Love Magic with its elegant orchestra and the heart-wrenching Fly as his most achingly beautiful song (although I prefer the version on Bryter Layter). For obvious reasons, it calls to mind another melancholy masterpiece, the song Firefly by American Music Club.

This graceful take of The Thoughts Of Mary Jane is embellished by Richard Thompson's electric guitar, but the album's real classic is Black Eyed Dog, a chilling listening experience. It's like a momento mori, the most magical dance of anguish between his voice and the guitar.

Covered by World of Skin on their Ten Songs for Another World album, that version is now available on Swans' Various Failures 1988 - 1992 compilation in all ... Read More:
