One of the most influential releases ever to grace the world of popular music, its effects shaped the course of Glam Rock, Punk, Goth, New Romantics, Indie and no doubt music which is not very good. It's a truly special album, which deserves its hype amongst music critics and fans alike.

Released in 1967 on The Verve Record Label, The Velvet Underground and Nico really does stand out from the other albums recorded during 1966/67. When we talk about the production going into other 1967 releases like Sgt Pepper, or even the closest British equivalent to the Velvets; Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates, The Velvet Underground and Nico's production on their debut is pretty much none existent, but that surely is the point.

This doom-laden album, Nico's fourth as a solo artist, does not deviate very far from the style, sound and themes that made its immediate predecessors - The Marble Index and Desertshore - such unsettling, but compulsive listening. The dark, disturbed lyrics which explore metaphysical concepts, the distinctive, droning sound of the harmonium fading randomly and disconcertingly in and out of tracks and the continued presence of key collaborator John Cale (working here as both a producer and multi-instrumentalist) lend The End... a definite sense of familiarity. Thankfully, this proximity to her past work has not bred contempt. Her inspired cover of The Doors' `The End', the track which gives this album its title, is not a radical reinterpretation; instead, ... Read More:

Like Marmite, Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica and the Leeds United football team of the 1970s the music of Nico engenders a `love' or `hate' reaction. The reasons for such a visceral response can be ascertained by listening to this compilation. The Frozen Borderline 1968-70 matches the dark The Marble Index with its fatalistic follow-up Desertshore in a bleak pairing which is unlikely to earn the late Nico any posthumous gold discs.

Music journalist Simon Reynolds has stridently asserted that "The Marble Index sounds like nothing before or since. If anything matches it in mood terms, it's Joy Division's Closer". His judgement is accurate. It does share the power and profundity of that post-punk classic. Indeed, the dead-eyed `No One Is There' is ... Read More:

This is one of Nico's very finest albums, a moody, lusciously orchestrated and impeccable sounding debut by anyone's standards. Truly, THIS is where Nico's real career began, instead of being an ornament for the Velvet Underground.

This album is roughly a million miles away from some of Nico's later solo efforts, especially 'The End', which boasts atmospherics and gloom which would make Joy Division unsure. Having said that, 'The End' was genius, but so is this.

Album opener 'The Fairest Of The Seasons' is vintage Nico, all introspection and heavy philosophising. It is a great introduction to Nico's voice, which is utterly unique and without any comparsion to any other singer, male or female. Where this album differs from any other Nico album is that the ... I had this on vinyl in the 70s, and it's a glaring reminder that records used to have two sides. Side 1 is appalling, almost unlistenable - from Eno's squawks to the lumbering dirges contributed by the former Velvets, Cale and Nico. I think I played it once. Side 2 however is pure joy. The great Kevin Ayers strolls out to sing five proper songs with a kind of lazy exuberance and the sort of easy charm that only slightly posh Englishmen seem to have. The band are tight and the guitar solos by Mike Oldfield and the underrated Ollie Halsall are exquisite.

Some critics have observed that this performance would not give new listeners any indication of Ayers' seminal role in the British experimental and "progressive" rock music scene of the late 60s and early 70s. Thank God for ... Read More:

Nico's final studio album, recorded in 1985, is a sad and rather depressing end to a career otherwise marked by eccentricity, uniqueness and brilliance. As is clear, I am a huge fan of Nico's music and I therefore approached this album with as open a mind as possible, looking for any positives, but there are few. What is clear is the extent to which, by 1985, Nico was being used by others for their own benefit, clearly not for her's - heroin addiction and increasing mental problems had made her seemingly unable to realise, or possibly even to care, that this was so.

Many brief overviews of Nico's career depict Camera Obscura as a close relation to, and natural successor to, her 1981 album Drama of Exile. The reality is nothing of the sort. Although Drama of Exile is a little patchy, ... Read More:

I have to confess that when I read the influences that this band/guitarist have I was a little sceptic, you know... Deep Purple, Audioslave, Joe Satriani? wow, I thought, I must check this band out!

I received the CD 3 days ago and my first impression was really good, the packaging is awesome, great graphics, booklet, lyrics and cool photos. I was not expecting this level of presentation so top marks for that.

I decided that I wanted to give it a fair listening before writing a review.

"No time for sadness" is track number one, an instrumental blues opening that really made me feel 'lonely and as blue as you can be'. After 1 minute the track changes into a fast uptempo rock track, Nico's guitar style is very refined (not a shredder that CAN'T shred) but a ... Read More:
