Following his success with the E Street Band it is easy to forget what an incredible solo talent Nils Lofgren is. Without doubt he is an amazing guitarist almost up there with Jimmy Page, David Gilmore, Keith Richards, Hank Marvin, Slash etc, as his work with the E Street Band shows; but it must be said he is also a fantastic singer and song writer also. Many songs on this 'best of album' with his band Grin illustrate this. The song 'Like Rain' is truly brilliant, as are many other songs on this album. And at £2.98 on Amazon the album is an absolute bargain.

At last, the second of Nils two albums for Backstreet/MCA Records has resurfaced on CD and not before time. 10 tracks which are as rocking as anything Nils offered before, but at last the lyrical bitterness and misoginy has disappeared to be replaced with a worldy wiser style.

Nils keeps up a tradition of covering heroes, and this time it's 'It's All Over Now' which stomps around well. The highlight however are mostly on the first half of the disc, 'Across The Tracks', 'Into The Night' and 'Daddy Dream' all classics (the latter is a great in car song), second half is a bit weaker, but ends on another classic closing Nils song (much like all his previous studio albums), the guitars wailing away in 'Deadline' are superb.

Nils is a fine, underrated artist. Accoustic live was one of my favourite albums of the last few years and I had very high hopes of this. Unfortunately I was a little dissappointed. The voice and guitar are as good as ever, but the songwriting is not quite as strong as it has been. He's occasionally had a tendency to be a little schmaltzy is his lyrics and there are several examples here. Buy if you're already a big fan, but otherwise go for one of his other albums.

Nils Lofgren is probably better known as a sideman to Bruce Springsteen, but he has been putting out solo albums since the early seventies. This one is from the later half of that decade and showcases some of his great guitar playing. A lot of his albums sound as if they have been produced not to scare anybody off. This album suffers a bit in parts from the same slighty safe arrangements but when he let's rip ,especially on the tracks "Share a Little" and the old yardbirds number "for your love", you can hear just how talented and raw edged he can be. Lofgrens style is based in a rock blues idiom but he combines this with his own unique use of plucked harmonics to create a truly memorable sound that is truly emotionally engaging.

I have nothing to add to all the positive comments made by other reviewers about this album ~ it is something of a classic, albeit the electric guitar sounds rather shrill in places.

However, I bought the CD reissue first time round back in 1990 and, having waited many years for a newly digitally remastered edition to come out, I have to say I've been rather disappointed by this. To my ears anyway, it sounds virtually no different from the original CD issue (and I do set great store by good digital remastering).

So yes, this is a great album of its time and genre, but for this latest reissue I really don't think they've done much more than include in the sleeve notes the name of the bloke who did the original transfer from ... Read More:

This is the one that started it all off - the rare-as-hens'-teeth live-in-the-studio "official bootleg" that garnered cult status for Nils back in the early 70s.

I'm lucky enough to have a copy of the precious vinyl but have hankered after a CD version for many years. Several tracks have cropped up on compilations, but this is the first CD release of the full monty - including the definitive version of the Grin classic "Like Rain" (which blows away the one on the "official" first live album "Night After Night").

My only gripe is that they've not retained the original "handwritten" sleeve, but otherwise, top marks. If you only own one Nils album, this is the one.

Despite the unimaginative and dated look of the album at first glance...a powerful collection is contained within. In stark contrast to the acclaimed, much later "Acoustic Live" set, this electric selection shows Lofgren at his rawest. From the ever popular "No Mercy" to "Moontears" (perhaps the most definitive sounding Nils track) it exemplifies the versatility of arguably the most imaginative, respected and requested session player alive. Never quite achieving the success of his peers or indeed that which the media predicted, I find it astonishing that Nils' cult status has remained despite the undoubted influence his misic has had on the more popular mainstream artists.
