Coming five years after their impressive Shake Hands With Shorty, Electric Blue Watermelon is North Mississippi Allstar's fifth and finest album so far and was named after a loosely assembled band led by Memphis musician Lee Baker, who played blues festival gigs in Memphis during the 1960s. Pretty much as you would expect from a live NMA album. A good rock blues work out, more along the lines of "shake hands with shorty" than "polaris". Assorted friends and relations pop along to add their contributions with varying degrees of success. It's allways good to hear from RL Burnside, adds an authentic raw feel. Good selection of familiar album tracks and blues standards, played in their own inimitable energetic style. On the negative side the sound recording isn't the best I've heard, and some of Cody's drumming isn't quite as tight as it could be in places (the electric washboard solo is fun to see live but I don't think it really deserves to be commited to CD. If you like the allstars and want more of the same, buy yhis album.

On the back of a great debut album and having enjoyed seeing them play an oustanding set in London a couple of years ago, I looked forward to the next offering with baited breath. Unfortunately it seems that I should have held my breath a bit longer, this has got to rate as one of the most disappointing 2nd albums I've ever had the displeasure to buy. From a raw unique sound with some innovative sounds and great attitude on their first album, I find myself worrying if anyone can hear what's now playing on my headphones. The first tune on this album that sounds anything like those that whet my whistle in the first place is track 8 'Never in all my days' but this is the first time that work has been so boring that I've managed to ... This album is very different to "shake hands..." and takes a bit of playing to get used to it, but grows on you and has some varied and interesting tracks. I particularly like - "Snakes..", "Sugartown", "Lord..", Storm" "Leavin'" and "Mud". The tracks have a slightly lazy feel about them and the slide is nice, though a little too economical and laid back at times - but in the right mood I might be more receptive. In Summary - not as fresh and vibrant as "shake hands..." but more gritty and riffy than the Solaris tracks I've heard.

North Mississippi All Stars' debut is collection of classic country-blues covers. coming from various musical backgrounds (one member was part of a hardcore punk band whilst another was part of a gospel band) they have an exceptionally diverse sound without sounding like a complete mess. their blues influences are clear, and their style is definately that of the Deep South. but when you hear them, you really cannot complain. toe-tappingly catchy and a very confident start to what'll no doubt be a successful career. definately worth getting.
