Having grown up with the popular music of the 60s, 70s, 80s etc and loved music from Classical to Heavy Metal but not Jazz. In the past two years I have been introduced to Oscar Peterson and I could almost throw all other genres away after living with this album for the last six months. This is absolute total musical perfection and an awesome early 60s recording.

Looking forward to getting to know other albums.

This whole DVD is a joy! Even though you may think, as I do, that the "real" original Oscar Peterson Trio consists of OP, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen this recording is no less great - on the contrary.
Oscar Peterson's immense drive backed by Martin Drew's fine drumming and rhythm and NHOP's equilibristic swinging bassplaying form a synthesis. Just listen to and enjoy NHOP's playing on "Nigerian marketplace".
This is a 5 star + recording - do yourself a favour and buy it.

Yes, when I hear Webster blow his horn I'm smitten by the sheer beauty of his sound; the way he carresses his mouthpeace and blows his horn somehow produces warm and complex tone, capable of extremely wide range of emotion, impressive in all registers, but always beautiful (without even a hint of schmaltz or kitsch...).

In upper register he sometimes sounds sensitive like a violin, without pathetic quality (jazz) violinists can have in their upper register playing, in lower register my whole body reverberates with Ben's power. And for all this to take place it is not even necessary that he is caught at the peak of his form or in the right company!

Well, at this album he is right there at his peak and, in the company ... Read More:

For well over 50 years Oscar Peterson has been arguably the world's finest jazz pianist. Naturally talented and technically brilliant, he has an exquisite lightness of touch on the keyboard, and none of his arrangements or improvisations go so far off the original tune, or lean too far to the avant garde, to alienate all but the jazz enthusiast.

This collection is taken from his time with the Verve and MPS labels, from 1954 to 1971, certainly his most prolific and commercially successful period. The tracks mine the deep pit that is the Great American Songbook, with the odd excursion out to Liverpool and France, and they all swing, but gently, with the exception of Michel Legrand's "Windmills Of Your Mind", where something of a gale blows up.

It's hard to think of anyone who has a tone quite like Stan Getz: breathy yet rich, cool yet passionate, he was unique. Famous for his wonderful bossa nova recordings, he also made some great music with other jazz masters. This album with the Oscar Peterson Trio is particularly fine. Getz's warm, lyrical tone caresses a collection of great tunes with admirable collaboration from one of the finest trios of all time. The lack of a drummer allows an intimate, relaxed feeling to the proceedings, and the results are seriously enjoyable. Highlights include a swinging "Pennies From Heaven" and beautiful ballad work on "Detour Ahead" and "I'm Glad There Is You". All Getz fans and jazz lovers should investigate this CD without delay.

This is one of the few Oscar Peterson solo Piano records. Norman Granz and Duke Ellington had been trying to pursade Oscar to record a solo Piano album for quite a while and in November 1970 this was the result.

The man responsible for producing the album was Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer and he deserves a lot of credit. Its one of the best sounding solo Piano records ever produced. The moment you hear the first track you will begin to wonder how on earth all other Piano albums sound so bad in comparison. What does Hans know that other producers don't?!!

As for the playing, well this is Oscar Peterson at the absolute height of his powers. The opening track will leave you stunned:
Amazing locked hands chord work, wonderful single line ... Read More:

I first bought this record on vinyl in mono in the 1960's. Hearing it again on CD and in stereo is pure joy. The previous reviewers have remarked on the fun the musicians are having and the accessibility of the music. I must add that the bass playing by Ray Brown is superb, and plays a huge part in the overall quality of the music. More than just part of the rhythm section, his 'duet' with Clark Terry on Roundalay is one of the highlights for me. Unpretentious fun, with the very highest standard of musicianship from each member of the quartet.

A great artist in his exuberant, "Basieish" youth, Lester Young often proved that in his mature years he could add to the subtlety and feeling, without sacrifising any of the rhythmical power.
How could anyone ever have believed that his post WW-II years were a throwaway alltogether?

Here, propelled by Peterson's fine group, The Pres swings hard, starting with the mighty "Ad Lib Blues" but in the very next song, beautiful ballad "I Can't Get Started", shows the greatest strength of his playing on this CD. The name of the game is emotion, reached through melodic innovativeness and rhythmical subtlety.

Interestingly enough, in the company of a more emotional Teddy Wilson on another masterpiece from the 50's (Pres and Teddy , Young showed ... Read More:

We Get Requests is a 'Diet' version of Oscar Peterson. The majority of his albums 'wow' the listener and, sometimes, they are left unconnected and overwhelmed when swamped by Oscar's furious techical ability. Not in this album, however.

If you are new to the world of Oscar Peterson, or perhaps feel as though you would like to explore a different, more sensitive side to his playing then this album is perfect for you. In all the tracks Oscar is contained. He never shifts into a high gear. He seems somewhat limited. But this is all to good effect.

The album is addictve: it is so easy to listen to. The Trio is performing as a unit to the highest of levels. Brown and Thigpen are so tight in the background that they take Peterson's piano to a new dimension. ... Read More:
