Having grown up with the popular music of the 60s, 70s, 80s etc and loved music from Classical to Heavy Metal but not Jazz. In the past two years I have been introduced to Oscar Peterson and I could almost throw all other genres away after living with this album for the last six months. This is absolute total musical perfection and an awesome early 60s recording. Looking forward to getting to know other albums.

I first bought this record on vinyl in mono in the 1960's. Hearing it again on CD and in stereo is pure joy. The previous reviewers have remarked on the fun the musicians are having and the accessibility of the music. I must add that the bass playing by Ray Brown is superb, and plays a huge part in the overall quality of the music. More than just part of the rhythm section, his 'duet' with Clark Terry on Roundalay is one of the highlights for me. Unpretentious fun, with the very highest standard of musicianship from each member of the quartet.

A great artist in his exuberant, "Basieish" youth, Lester Young often proved that in his mature years he could add to the subtlety and feeling, without sacrifising any of the rhythmical power. How could anyone ever have believed that his post WW-II years were a throwaway alltogether? Here, propelled by Peterson's fine group, The Pres swings hard, starting with the mighty "Ad Lib Blues" but in the very next song, beautiful ballad "I Can't Get Started", shows the greatest strength of his playing on this CD. This is a superb re-issue of an already good original album. This CD re-issue has five extra tracks over the original album tracks. At this stage of his career (1961) Oscar Peterson was at effortless peak that he maintained for an incredibly longtime (basically the 1950's to the mid 1980's. This is best represented by 'Chicago'. Starting with an inspired introduction which keeps you guessing what the tune will be, followed by a gradual change up through the gears until at 7:13 top gear is reached and the band are absolutely swinging. Now Oscar is really flying, bits of stride Piano, double handed parts that require virtuoso technique... This is an astounding performance that everybody should have in their Jazz Piano collection. This is a superb recording! The arrangements of the songs from West Side Story are done to perfection here, with a groovy and swinging feel to it. Oscar Peterson's fingering is thrilling to say the least, and his band members are definitely top notched accomplished jazz artists. To be able to play "Somewhere" in a jazzy manner and yet retaining its poignancy is itself an amazing feat. Try listening to the opening of "Maria", where a tinge of Latin flavour sets the scene of the story. Let this recording conjure up a whole new perspective on Bernstein's masterpiece.

This is a Jazz album that everyone should have in their collection. The Oscar Peterson Trio is joined Milt Jackson and what a beautiful album they create together. Recorded in 1961 the album starts with On Green Dolphin Street. This is mellow and laid back for a while and then changes gear to swing. Perhaps the most noticeable thing about this track is Peterson's very restrained and delicate Piano solo. Even when the solo reaches the swing section there aren't the torrents of notes that you might expect. This is Oscar Peterson showing a different facet to his great talent.
