Why not match the songs of Cole Porter with Patricia Barber, one of the most thoughtful and powerful jazz vocalists working today? What a great idea! As a longtime fan of Barber's, I am delighted to see her varying her darker, more experimental work with this album. Her outstanding technical talent and understated delivery work miracles on 'standards' such as 'Miss Otis Regrets' and 'I Get a Kick out of You'. The band are in great shape too. Perfect listening as the nights start to draw in. At least that's my excuse.

A masterpiece!A jazz (?) album that every open minded music lover falls in love with.12 pieces of ultimate musical beauty so diverse, witty, melodical, emotional that i'm left speechless every time i hear it(and i have it for years!).With "Split" she has given us a glimpse of her enormous talent but with this record even if she didn't produce anything else after it, she would have been in cult status (as she already is).Buy it,buy it for your friends, your kids,your parents,your enemies(they will become friends after it).Superb music,superb WITTY voice,superb production-be carefull:it can be addictive!

What a fabulous album this is! I'll lay my cards on the table - I'm a big fan of Patricia Barber so I expected something super-good. But this exceeds my expectations by a good way. For me this album marks a big step forward in the quality of Ms Barber's writing (not that it was less than excellent before). Each of the numbers has a more thoroughly "composed" feel to a it than previously, meticulously worked out and with truly stunning arrangements - detailed, multi-layered yet completely fresh and exciting. The range of musical style and nuance is particularly remarkable, with everything from pure torch vocals and delicious small-ensemble jazz, through rock guitar grooves to hip hop. Patricia Petibon demonstrates her va va va voom through versatility, virtuosity, vitality and verve, never more clearly than in Les Fantasies ... which range from comic Bernstein through three charming Carols from Quebec to Handel. The final track #23 Rameau, Platée - Air de la Folie also features on Airs Baroques Français and the penultimate track #22 Offenbach, Orphée aux enfers - Air de Cupidon, with its kissing chorus, would not be out of place on French Touch. The real gem for me is Caldara #17-21 La Passione di Gesù Cristo Signor Nostro (libretto by Metastasio). Patricia Barber sounds sharp and clear on my kit. The variety of sound is fascinating. At times the rhythms are powerful and forceful, and at others are subtle and delicate. The different instrumentations vary likewise from simple to complex, and the singers voice has a thrilling range of pitch and tone, and, dare I say it, emotion. This album deserves your attention - it will grab your attention.
