The reviewer above is spot-on in his assessment of this set. Lewis' virtuosity allows him to sound spontaneous, secure and sensitive at the same time. He presents Beethoven as a much more agreeable character than we are used to when listening to more extreme interpreters such as Kovacevich or Pollini. The flipside of the human Beethoven is that the frenzy that can be created in the Hammerklavier (one of the previous volumes) or the last movement of Op 111 is replaced by a range of more down-to-earth emotions. Lewis' Beethoven doesn't do jazz. It's different, but extremely impressive nonetheless. And in further agreement with the other reviewer: the ending of Op111 is pure magic...

Great collaboration ! Thanks to Andy Lewis for making that new macho voice surf on again. After reading Paolo Hewitt's "Changingman" and its spot on assertion that Weller's music is SO masculine since "Moderdism: A new decade (and I couldn't agree more) glad to see and hear Weller back to a soulful mood. Reminescences of "Solid bond..." and "Beat Surrender" poor in while the sound remains current, a great driving song. And, surprise, it gets even better ! A wonderful single. Can't wait for the OPUS.

Liszt's Sonata in B minor is rightly regarded as one of the pinnacles of piano writing in the nineteenth century. It combines romantic intensity, virtuosic flair and formal complexity in a way which no other composer has since rivalled. It presents formidable technical challenges - although other works by Liszt are, arguably, more fiercesome for the potential performer. The market place in the Liszt sonata is a crowded one. Yet I can say that Paul Lewis has few equals - this recording is up there with the very best. Lewis' approach is a tribute to his learning under Alfred Brendel and shows a profound musical sensibility at work. The technique is more than secure - at times the playing sounds effortless.
