This could be Pentangle's best album - 'Basket of Light' is the only other contender, but this one has much more material on it. The first disc was recorded live in 1968 and the second is from the studio. The live show is great, with a mix of folk standards, originals and instrumentals showing great dexterity and skill from all involved. Bert Jansch and John Renbourn's version of Mingus' 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' is a standout instrumental tune - very relaxing and melodic. The studio set is a strong album in its own right, with highlights (for me) being the guitar duel of 'In Time', the morality tale 'Sovay' and the grooving 'I've Got A Feeling', which borrows the chord sequence from Miles Davis' 'All Blues'. Of all the Pentangle albums, this is by far my favourite - if you could add Cruel Sister & Let No Man Steal Your Thyme to it, it would be perfect! Sally Free & Easy is sublime, and the only song that betters it in my mind is Willy O'Winsbury (the tune of which will be familiar to Fairport fans as it was used to set the words of Farewell Farewell to). The only song I'm not too keen on is the Lady of Carlisle, but then you can't have everything!

I met an old girlfriend after a five year gap,we had completely forgotten each other, yet within ten seconds she told me she had a partner, even though the old magic was there, we were now doing almost the same job, and she had clients in the block where I work.I called her office, had a quick chat, to no immediate avail...so I listened to "I once had a sweetheart" on repeat for about five hours, and it helped, so the album get's five stars.

This is a very enjoyable Pentangle album, although to be honest I find Jack Orion a rather drawn out & dull affair. I'd rather a couple more tracks in the vein of Cruel Sister & When I Was In My Prime. However, it's well worth adding to one's collection for the other tracks alone; it was a brave departure for Pentangle from their usual fare, and it's great that they persued musical integrity over fame. This is certainly an album that deserves a lot more praise than it has ever had.

Anyone considering this box set will most likely already know Pentangle's music. So, no need to mention how wonderful the music is. However, what is worth mentioning is that Sanctuary reissued this box set in 2008 - and this is the version to get, as the enclosed 60-page booklet is better glued in to the box set and looks like it will not fall apart - a major complaint of the earlier box set version.

so you've got bert jansch one of the greatest folk guitarists or guitarists of all time and john renbourne the most immatated guitarist of his time,jacqui mcshee who i can only discribe as the beth orton of her time (she also shares likeness' with nico from the velvet underground), and danny thompson on bass and terry cox on drums and what do you get?...possibly the greatest fusions of folk, jazz, blues of all time, possibly even one of the greatest albums of its time. This record is quintessentially sixties. If you like your blues, your folk, your jazz, buy this album. I love it and you will too, i can almost guarantee.

Great collection of songs. Don't know if its just Amazon's batch but there is a fault with this set the songs that should be on disc one are on disc three and the songs that should be on disc three are on disc one

This is a CD full of disappointment. Firstly, all you get is 41 minutes. OK, maybe I did not read the information about the CD closely enought - but c'mon! 41 minutes? Unless you are a die-hard Pentangle fan (which I thought I was close to) your enjoyment of a reasonably clean performance will be continually marred by thinking how much you only paid for the privilege of 41 minutes-worth. It is a shame that, for example, this could not have been combined with the BBC In Concert recording, which was recently aired on BBC4 (so it does still exist), or perhaps any modern footage that may exist. The audio quality is fair although I have to say that neither Mssrs Renbourn or Jansch particularly shine in their performances. ... Read More:
