For years this album has been highly placed in the "best live rock albums ever" stakes. I 've read glowing reviews of how fantastic it is. I'd heard two songs from it "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Show Me The Way." I'd thought that they weren't exactly rock and indeed theuy were usually played on easy listening stations. So I took the plunge and bought it. What a let down. I can't even begin to fathom how such lightweight, overdubbed, easy listening rubbish has wormed it's way into the "great live albums". Doobie Wah, Wind Of Change, Penny For Your Thoughts etc wouldn't be out of place on Terry Wogan's morning radio show on Radio 2. Having only ever listened to the original album from in the form it first came out in 1976,the 25TH anniversary edition was on first listening disappointing, partially because the added tracks did not come up to scratch with the 14 tracks on the '76' album but also because some of the tracks had been moved around from the original recordings lineup.However suprisingly after dismissing the second disappointment I persevered and it has grown on me to the extent where when I fancy putting on 'Frampton comes alive' I cannot decide which version to play.........it is a brilliant,classic 70s album that I have never tired of.

This is a reasonable collection of some of Peter Frampton's best known singles and album tracks, but it inevitably gives only very superficial coverage of his long career. It would be OK for anyone who wants only a few examples of his work, but for those seeking a more comprehensive compilation, or indeed just better value, the double CD 'Shine on' is a far better choice. With a total of 30 tracks, including the full contents of 'Greatest hits', together with detailed notes and some interesting archive photos, 'Shine on' is the best Frampton collection currently available and costs only a small amount more than 'Greatest hits'. If you appreciate fine song writing, dazzling guitar playing and sublime vocals then why have you not purchased this excellent 2 cd set from one of the greatest British artists ever? This compliation really does offer extra ordinary value and there is not a dud song in site. And yes, it does contain songs from THAT live album (which of course is timeless but for too many people, thats all they have ever heard by Peter Frampton). This compliation is an Aladdin's cave of the very best of Mr Frampton and is proof that he made consistently fine music during his long career. The fact that it is remastered also enhances the listening pleasure so what are you doing reading this??!! Add to your basket now without further hesitation. Trust me on this one!

The sadly underrated Frampton blasts from one great song to the next on an album that never sold as well as it deserved. Compared to the lighweight pop that was the 'I'm in You' album this is very heavy indeed. For lovers of guitar-laced rock then this album is a must. The title track "Breaking all the Rules" is rock at its best. I saw Peter in London in Feb. 2004 and he was just awesome.

This CD is a tremendous surprise - well crafted is the description that comes to mind. The whole work is beautifully put together - every song has a feeling of completeness - the space left in the soundscape contributing to the impact of the sublime playing and singing. The songs range from classy rockers thro` to acoustic ballads all with thoughtful lyrics. The only fault in my view is the single cover song - George Harrison`s While my guitar gently weeps which I could do without as it is not a great version as does not match the rest of the collection. This is a mature piece of work by a master craftsman who knows how to express himself - very rare these days - so buy it and savour the songs over time. More please Mr Frampton!!

.. for those who bought the original vinyl all those years ago ! For the rest of you, this is a rare treat and will be seen, by some, as an ideal complement to the Album. I bought this plus 'Live in Detroit' and can heartily recommend both.... but I'm biased, I've been a fan for years ! Go on ! Spoil yourself, you know you want to !
