There have been many productions of Grimes around the world and a good few recordings made since this first one was committed to disc nearly half a century ago. From our perspective in the 21st Century it is hard to recall the huge impact made by the first production at Sadlers' Wells in 1946 and by this recording just a decade or so later. It's now easier to see the antecedents and ancestors of the piece - Verdi, Mahler, even Mozart. At the time it seemed a really revolutionary piece, not only for British but also for worldwide opera.

The recording, too, was something new. This was the first time that John Culshaw and his Decca team had fully implemented their ideas for making a real production out of a stereo opera recording. ... Read More:

Nearly all the pieces contained on this disc feature Britten himself, either conducting or in some other performing/ supervisory capacity. In addition, Decca producer John Culshaw's far-sightedness in recording works in stereo way back in the early 1950s means the label possesses a formidable array of gorgeously preserved and authoritative readings of Britten pieces, many of which have been cherry-picked to form this delightful entry into his world. Two popular orchestral pieces, The Young Person's Guide... and Simple Symphony, are included in their entirety (in what can for once be described in that oft-misused term, as 'definitive' recordings) and there are good, representative excerpts from several Britten operas, folksong arrangements and - of ... Music : Britten: Spring Symphony
Browsing through the Amazon catalogue,I was moved to find out whether this work, one of my favourites, had been converted onto CD. Imagine my joy when I found out that it had.

I first heard the Spring Symphony 40 years ago, and, having only previously heard The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra, was immediately captivated by the simplicity of concept and yet very individual expression of Britten's writing. It was my introduction (as I see it) to mainstream Britten. The work develops from a treatment of the world emerging from winter in the first two numbers, featuring predominantly woodwind and brass, and breaks out joyously into a setting for full orchestra of the Nashe poem, Spring the Sweet Spring. Thereafter the work is ... Read More:

Music : Britten - Opera excerpts and Folksongs
This is a disc that takes us right back to the very beginnings of the renaissance of English opera. These are the original casts from the first productions of Grimes and Lucretia. (Well, strictly the second cast of Lucretia as Nancy Evans alternated with Kathleen Ferrier in the premiere run at Glyndebourne).

Certainly the performances here have the feeling of coming hot from the composer's forge. Pears at this time was significantly younger than when he recorded the role of Grimes for Decca and it shows. He sounds more of a rough fisherman, less of an urbane aesthete on these excerpts: the voice is fresher, too. Though Joan Cross sounds a touch maternal (Ellen Orford was, after all, a widow), she sings the Embroidery aria quite beautifully. ... Read More:
