1.Bach: Cantatas, BWV36, 61 & 62 from: Archiv Produktion

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Bach: Cantatas, BWV36, 61 & 62
These performances date from 1992, and are thus not part of the famous and successful 'pilgrimage' that Gardiner and his colleagues undertook in the millennium year to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Bach's death. The presentation of the disc leans over backwards to associate itself with that undertaking, but I suppose a certain amount of that kind of thing is legitimate and in this case, unlike another that I encountered recently, it is not carried to extent of being misleading to the point of offensiveness.

We have here three cantatas for the first Sunday of Advent, and 20 years separate the earliest from the last. Common to the words set in all three is a text of Luther proclaiming the invocation 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland' ... Read More:

If one judges a recorded performance on the basis of sound quality, this would be a winner: the Decca engineers are outstanding as always, but that's where my praise for this recording ends. Chailly's approach to Mahler is, to this reviewers ear, a sequence of overinflated and meaningless gesture. The orchestral playing is superb and the soloist excellent, but Chailly seems determined to overexaggerate every nuance, as if Mahler's vision needs to be constantly underlined. This is a bright work, joyously celebrating nature, with the tragic undertones that are everpresent even in Mahler's most optimistic moments.

Great performances of this work can allow these qualities to emerge naturally, without the hyperbole that marks and mars ... Read More:

This really is a fabulous addition to any fan of sixties WHO albums. The original is a must purchase but this is superb.
The amazing vocal prowress of Petra is truly amazing and I tend to play this now more than the original.

Pete Townshend has stated that he is a big fan of this album and once heard you will see why. How she manages to emulate the whole thing herself by overlaying her voice to copy instruments and all the harmonies is fascinating.

Even if you are not a big fan of accapello you will still enjoy this album. I hope in the future she also covers other WHO albums but after working on and off for three years on this one I doubt it.

You will not have wasted a penny buying this and I am sure it will be a ... Read More:

Loved some of the tracks but some were quite lame - you can tell they were early Petra. Having said that, it's not a bad album per se. I just like the raunchier stuff - like their PRAISE album, which I still think is their best. Live Petra are awesome, saw them at Disney's Night of Joy way back in 92 or 93, and they were brilliant. an ok album but a bit light for me
