This is the album REM had to make following the dull mid-tempo sludge of Around The Sun. It's a return to better form, and despite not being up there with the great earlier albums it's still an enjoyable 35 minute rush of classic REM. The opening 3 songs in particular pack a punch, and it's good to hear Peter Buck let loose again on uptempo stonkers like Living Well Is The Best Revenge and Horse To Water. Slower songs like Houston and Until The Day Is Done have an Automatic FTP feel to them (which is a good thing) and the closing glam thrash of I'm Gonna DJ sounds like Stipe was singing it after drinking too much Babycham (which is not such a good thing).

This is the first time I have bought a REM Cd and so far, the tracks I have heard are great. Every song on this album is great.

A beautiful record that I never tire of listening to. It has been with me a long time - my favourite record alongside Nirvana Unplugged - and has a terrific soothing quality.
The only thing I would question is the inclusion of "Ignoreland" which hints at their later political actions but does little to complement the album's mood of brooding but optimistic introspection.
Strangely, perhaps, I'm not a big fan of "Everybody Hurts" either. But the rest of the album is sheer brilliance, and more than the sum of its parts. "Sweetness Follows" and "Nightswimming" in particular are sublime.
The band would never be the same after Bill Berry left, witness his input into songs like "Find the River", probably my favourite track of all time.

This was the time when the UK stood up and took notice of Athens' finest. Their bravery in issuing a mandolin led first single was regrettably offset by their foray into cheesy pop. 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Radio Song' aside, this is an excellent record that holds songs of great variety and boasts two of the best songs of that particular era in 'Losing My Religion' and a song so personal that Mr Stipe had to perform it with his back to the audience - 'Country Feedback'. They may have been thrust upon the UK market for all the wrong reasons (see cheesy pop reference above), but in this case the end very definitely justified the means.

I still have vivid memories of the disgust I felt when I put this album on my stereo for the first time. My only prior experience of their vast catalog was Automatic for the People and Out of Time (with AFTP being perhaps my favourite album at that time - perhaps it still is, but I digress), so this disc was a complete shock to me. Its big, fat, distorted bass sounds, jarring, overdriven electric guitar and "treated" vocals were at least a million miles away from the stripped down acoustic perfection of AFTP.
When I spoke with my friends about it, I was unable to put into words just how much I hated everything about the record. However, after a few more listenings, I found that Strange Currencies appeared to have some redeeming qualities... Crush with Eyeliner followed... ... Read More:

It is blindingly obvious from the opening track that REM have revived their sound of yester- year. Peter Buck has also finally returned after sounding like he had been on vaccation during 'Around the Sun'. Although it should excite many fans of their earlier 'jingly- jangly' output, it just doesn't seem to work on this particular album. Maybe its because REM as a group have lost their vitality but whatever the cause, there is something definitely lacking.

In order to sum up this album, it is comprised of roughly half- an album's worth of tracks that are really worth listening to- living wells the best revenge, mansize wreath, horse to water. However tracks such as hollow man and supernatural superserious (cue silly- sounding title) are just plain average, where as I'm gonna ... Read More:

How do I give this 4 1/2 stars? 4 is too low, but it's not as perfect / fun as Automatic or Monster...
There's every REM mood of this stage of their career here, but I don't see that much point in Leave, Zither, or Low Dessert. As so many say about the White album, a shorter version would have concentrated the greatness of the rockers (Wakeup Bomb), rock ballads (Bittersweet me), love songs (Be Mine), incisive scenario-songs (New Test Leper)... and the perfect album- and show-closer Electrolite.
I'd probably recommend it behind 3 or 4 of their other albums, but it's only in comparison to those and other absolute classics that it appears imperfect.

ah the days when REM were an up and coming secret. There are some great songs on here, so much better than the stuff they do now. This album contains all the songs from just before the absolute golden era of REM (Orange, Out Of Time, Automatic For the People). The early signs of their creative genius are here in songs like Perfect Circle, The One I Love, Fall On Me and Finest Worksong.
You probably won't have heard of many of the tracks but I can assure you they are excellent.

Good album - but the reason i'm writing is to give the PROPER order of the tracks. As far as i'm aware, all formats have always infamously had the above listing which also omits a couple of tracks - this still confuses me. Below is the correct one (including bonus tracks on the IRS Years special edition)

1. Begin the begin
2. These Days
3. Fall on me
4. Cuyahoga
5. Hyena
6. Underneath the bunker
7. Flowers of Guatemala
8. I believe
9. What if we give it away
10.Just a touch
11.Swan swan H
12.Superman
13.Tired of singing trouble
14.Rotary ten
15.Toys in the attic
16.Just a touch (live)
17.Dream (all I have to do)
18.Swan swan H (acoustic)
