Strange currencies is a fantastic track from the Monster album. To call this song a "stand out" track is perhaps an injustice to the others but it is in a similiar vein to Automatics "everybody hurts" and New Adventures "E-bow". Bonus tracks include the excellent opener from Automatic "Drive" and a cover of the Iggy Pop classic "Funtime". All in all a great package.

Music : Imitation of Life [12" VINYL]
Imitation of Life, The classic REM sounding Pop song, the song is refreshing revival of REM's pop years of 'Out of Time' and 'Green', but probably not a good example of what the new 'Reveal' album is going to sound like even though it is the promotion single. The 2 B sides both apear on the new album are Excellent, and more representative of the new album, these tracks in my opinion are better than the actual title song. The Lifting (Sequel to Daysleeper from REM's last album 'Up')really is a masterpiece, and Beat a Drum the second B side is a mellow piano song which has a very dreamy, beautiful feel to it!!!

Music : Monster [VINYL]
I still have vivid memories of the disgust I felt when I put this album on my stereo for the first time. My only prior experience of their vast catalog was Automatic for the People and Out of Time (with AFTP being perhaps my favourite album at that time - perhaps it still is, but I digress), so this disc was a complete shock to me. Its big, fat, distorted bass sounds, jarring, overdriven electric guitar and "treated" vocals were at least a million miles away from the stripped down acoustic perfection of AFTP.
When I spoke with my friends about it, I was unable to put into words just how much I hated everything about the record. However, after a few more listenings, I found that Strange Currencies appeared to have some redeeming qualities... ... Read More:

110.Man on the Moon by: REM

Music : Man on the Moon
REM have a habit of throwing up an anthem, from the darkness of the "Losing My Religion", the heartbreak of "Everybody Hurts" to the pure bubblegum-pop of "Shiney Happy People"

The song relates to the cult American comic, Andy Kaufman, and is the name of the movie based on his life.

However, even without a knowledge of the late Mr Kaufman, this is much, much, much more. This is a song with a great pop heart, stirring lyrical body and good old rock 'n' roll skin. Equal parts tear-jerking and smile inducing, this is the best peice of music the band have done to encapsulate the unique spirit of REM.
