I thought it would be interesting to see what customer rating this album has after looking at all the 'return to form after the last two disappointments' reviews of Accelerate. I like Accelerate but I prefer this one, it having several standout songs for me, including The Lifting, She Just Wants To Be, I'll Take The Rain and Beat A Drum. It's just how I feel of course, so it might not be any use to you and I'm sure others are more descriptive, but the album as a whole to me feels like a familiar, claustrophobic summer - but more pleasant than that sounds. Check out the version of Beat A Drum on the Best Of REM double CD if you like the standard version on this album. I like it even more...

REM's last album 'Up' was a grave disappointment for the band's loyal followers, but the release of 'The Great Beyond' brought hope for the fans. Now 'Imitation of Life' gives the band a chance to redeem themselves with a good-old-fashioned REM rock song. 'Imitation of Life' brings a smile to my face - it's the lads from Athens, New Georgia, on top form again. The single is a sideswipe at the Hollywood culture which sees the band getting back to their roots as founders of the US punk movement back in the eighties. Although REM have never followed the true punk sound - they prefer to revel in their own delightful weirdness - they always get a message across in a beautifully harmonic style. A more ironic album title it would be hard to imagine. 'Up' captures REM at a low ebb, reeling from the sudden departure of drummer Bill Berry after 17 years' service. A documentary made at the time shows the three remaining members tense and tetchy, admitting to "communication issues" with one another. This fraught atmosphere spills over into the music. Edginess and paranoia prevail in this rootless, post-'OK Computer' world. Rarely have Michael Stipe's vocals sounded so dispirited and enervating. It all comes as a big shock after the bright, primary colours rock of 'New Adventures In Hi-Fi.' This being REM though they still manage to mine some magic from the mess.
