I don't often bother with these reviews but I really must stand up and defend this record. I have all of R.E.M's albums and like all of them, and I can honestly say that not only is this representative of their quality work, but it is also the only album where I think all of the tracks are pretty good.

Of course its a far cry stylistically from their older days, but purist fans who dismiss it out of hand for this cannot be reasoned with. Anyone who prefers Accelerate to this quite frankly has something wrong with them. This cd has twice the volume of quality material (in terms of length), and is much more melodic and better produced. If you were a great fan of Accelerate, perhaps this isn't for you. But if you were a fan of Up ... Read More:

Having recently re-visited REM's entire back catalogue - I have to say that i reckon this album is due a re-think in terms of rating!!
It groans under the pedestrian weight of its own pretentiousness - and songs such as E-Bow the Letter are sooooo mind numbing I can't believe its the same band that could produce such beauty as Swan Swan H and such positivity as I Believe!!
Its only redeeming feature however IS Electrolite. Beautiful. Wonderful.
I can hear you all now screaming "What about Around The Sun!! Or Up?!?! Or Reveal (another overrated one)"... But they all have something that this doesn't - live.. they translate - ESPECIALLY Around The Sun... this one is for bargain bins and evenings with your friend who smoke pipes and wants ... It is blindingly obvious from the opening track that REM have revived their sound of yester- year. Peter Buck has also finally returned after sounding like he had been on vaccation during 'Around the Sun'. Although it should excite many fans of their earlier 'jingly- jangly' output, it just doesn't seem to work on this particular album. Maybe its because REM as a group have lost their vitality but whatever the cause, there is something definitely lacking.

In order to sum up this album, it is comprised of roughly half- an album's worth of tracks that are really worth listening to- living wells the best revenge, mansize wreath, horse to water. However tracks such as hollow man and supernatural superserious (cue silly- sounding title) are just plain ... Read More:

A more ironic album title it would be hard to imagine. 'Up' captures REM at a low ebb, reeling from the sudden departure of drummer Bill Berry after 17 years' service. A documentary made at the time shows the three remaining members tense and tetchy, admitting to "communication issues" with one another.

This fraught atmosphere spills over into the music. Edginess and paranoia prevail in this rootless, post-'OK Computer' world. Rarely have Michael Stipe's vocals sounded so dispirited and enervating. It all comes as a big shock after the bright, primary colours rock of 'New Adventures In Hi-Fi.'

This being REM though they still manage to mine some magic from the mess. Sonically, it's their most experimental record. The band hunted down old drum machines ... Read More:

REM were once called 'America's Best Rock 'n' Roll Band' by Rolling Stone magazine. Over the years their music has progressed from a sort of up beat new face to the middle aged men on the fringe of rock who still produce great music, but still seem to get it right.
This album puts a new perspective on the REM sound. Using elements of REM but on a much bigger scale The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra create an almost entirely new series of songs to those that they are imitating. The feelings that 'Losing My Religion' and 'Nightswimming' bring forth are different to when listening Stipe strain to sing them. The feeling is not there, but the music is more intense. It creates a feeling of excitement in an old fan of the band. To hear how Stipe, Mills, Buck and Berry could have done ... Read More:

The sound quality on this compilation is terrible, it is a child of the loudness wars and clips dreadfully! If you like the band's earlier music I would suggest you steer clear of this and get the older, 1991 IRS recording 'The Best Of REM'. Sure there are less tracks on that album but it's listenable!

This is one of those albums which I can play in my head. The songs kind of bore their way in there!. I got the original album on tape, then upgraded to cd a few years back and now this version has come out. It is definitly worth picking up for someone who does not have the album, however R.E.M fans thinking this version contains lots of new surprises may be dissapointed. The dvd does contain a short promotional documentary and has some interesting stuff shot in the studio while making the album, but it doesn't quite justify the whole repackaging/reissue thing for me.
Michael Stipe is interesting in the documentary, the way he talks about the band he is much more confident than before, almost arrogant, which is in sharp contrast to recent interviews where he seems almost apologetic and quite subdued. ... Read More:

Music : Document
This record has their most focused political songs taking up the first half of the album.

Finest Work Song starts the record with the clarion call "the time to rise has been engaged / you're better best to rearrange".

Welcome To The Occupation is a Chomsky style look at the United States economic occupation of South America "offering the educated, primitive and loyal / welcome to the occupation" . When Stipe sings of "Sugar cane and coffee cup, copper steel and cattle / an annotated history, the forest for the fire" it reminds me of school lessons looking at maps of the world where the western countries are labeled with their name and developing countries marked only by the product they provide to the western world.

Exhuming McCarthy pinpoints the trick ... Read More:
