Having recently re-visited REM's entire back catalogue - I have to say that i reckon this album is due a re-think in terms of rating!! It groans under the pedestrian weight of its own pretentiousness - and songs such as E-Bow the Letter are sooooo mind numbing I can't believe its the same band that could produce such beauty as Swan Swan H and such positivity as I Believe!! Its only redeeming feature however IS Electrolite. Beautiful. Wonderful. I can hear you all now screaming "What about Around The Sun!! Or Up?!?! Or Reveal (another overrated one)"... But they all have something that this doesn't - live.. they translate - ESPECIALLY Around The Sun... this one is for bargain bins and evenings with your friend who smoke pipes ... Read More:

If you came to REM post 'Out Of Time' as I did and then collected all the albums to the present date, it was only natural that you would then investigate their earlier 'IRS' work. If this is the cream of that crop then I'm not impressed. It's weedy, jangly, student-friendly 'alternative' fodder and very different to the REM of today. There are many who cite this earlier incarnation as being the best version of the band but I suspect such people are merely looking back on their youth through rose-tinted spectacles. Would they really find this music special if they were exposed to it for the first time in their 40s? I very much doubt it. Yes there are a few good tunes on here (Don't Go Back To Rockville, The One I Love, Finest Worksong) but so many pathetic, ... Read More:
