Not being a huge REM fan in the first place, I bought this CD purely because it was cheap...but it has converted me! Some of the songs on here are classics while others are less well known (to me anyway). However, it's the DVD that pushed this up to 4 stars. How I wish I had been at that concert now, especially when "Losing My Religion" started!

This is what a track from 'Document' would sound like if it were written now, rather than 1987. And that is indeed a good thing because R.E.M. most definitely sound like a rock band again. Its very refreshing to hear those jangly, fuzz pedal guitars of Peter Buck and listen to Mike Mills finally harmonize with Michael again. The mix is great and every instrument, including Michael's voice are perfectly mixed like they used to be...it just sounds so democratic again. I love it. Lets hope the album is as good as the single. Welcome back boys!

36.Fables of the Reconstruction by: REM

Music : Fables of the Reconstruction
If you like their pop songs, buy "Green" or "Out Of Time". If you like their lush arrangements buy "Automatic" or "Reveal". If you like them to rock, buy "Document" or "Monster". But if you want to hear a bizarre R.E.M. record that you thought never existed, buy this. "Fables" is my favourite because it sounds so intimate and otherworldly. The production actually benefits from having no bottom end because it lends the album a creepy, skeletal feel that fits the songs. The music is post punk turned rustic, alien and beautiful. The lyrics are amongst Stipe's most moving, whispered to the listener and shot through with a desperate melancholy. In short, R.E.M. for Cure fans. A classic.

Music : Nightswimming
Without doubt REM reached their high point when they released Automatic For The People in 1992. This single is a nice little compilation of a Nightswimming from Automatic and 3 tracks from previous albums, recorded live for American Public Radio. Nightswimming alone is an excellent song, but the inclusion of "World Leader Pretend" (live) from Green is more than worth the price of the CD. The other live tracks are both good versions of tracks from Out Of Time.

This song is a perfectly crafted Rock Pop song, with relatively hard guitar riff for R.E.M. The Lyrics will take ages to decypher, but extremly cool. One of Peter Buck's most recognisable guitar solos half way through the song, is Excellent.

If you like this song, and the Guitar Playing you'll also like the Album 'Monster', from which 'What's the Frequency Kenneth' comes from, eventhough Monster is not as Pop orientated as the song, it is formidable!

40.At My Most Beautiful [CD 1] by: REM

Music : At My Most Beautiful [CD 1]
The charts are now typically dominated by commercialised love songs written by commitees and performed with no emotional involvement at all so Rem's simplistic yet beautiful love song is wonderfully refreshing. Stipe's vocals are soulful yet pressingly sincere and the song is stripped down to a plinking piano and beach-boy backing harmonies to make a beautiful piece of pop craftsmanship. Not content with making one of the best love songs of recent years, the band have also blessed this cd with two great b-sides. Theres a lenghty live cover of Iggy Pop's "Passenger" which is indulgently jazzy and also a grippingly gritty live version of "Country Feedback". One of Rem's best recent singles.
