Music : Automatic for the People [DVD AUDIO]
A beautiful record that I never tire of listening to. It has been with me a long time - my favourite record alongside Nirvana Unplugged - and has a terrific soothing quality.
The only thing I would question is the inclusion of "Ignoreland" which hints at their later political actions but does little to complement the album's mood of brooding but optimistic introspection.
Strangely, perhaps, I'm not a big fan of "Everybody Hurts" either. But the rest of the album is sheer brilliance, and more than the sum of its parts. "Sweetness Follows" and "Nightswimming" in particular are sublime.
The band would never be the same after Bill Berry left, witness his input into songs like "Find the River", probably my favourite track of all ... Read More:

Music : Reveal [DVD AUDIO]
The original CD release of R.E.M.'s 2001 album, REVEAL, was musically astonishing; lush, sun drenched, yet eriee and moody. Perhaps it's only fault was that it was a touch over-produced, and the songs felt 'constructed' out of the same effects and studio craft that overpowered the songs on UP. That doesn't stop REVEAL from being one of R.E.M.'s best moments, though, an album that captures perfectly the feeling of warmth that makes it a summer record. The songwriting is spot-on, with pieces like Saturn Return, I've Been High and Chorus and the Ring standing up to the brilliance of AUTOMATIC.

The DVD release of REVEAL, as with AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE, is a chance not only to hear a better sounding record, but to delve behind the scenes of its ... Read More:

Musicwise this album is very good - see main (CD only) page for reviews of that though.

The sound on this DVD-A is very clear, especially the vocals, however I feel the multi channel mix subtracts from the performance, it's confused with instruments coming out from weird places for seemingly no reason, some albums get away from this treatment, this one doesn't. It has two different options for play on DVD-A however, multi channel and 2 channel. The 2 channel is amazing, much better quality thatn the CD (if your equipment can notice it - if you can't tell the difference between CD and MP3, don't get this). I previously owned the original CD but had it stolen and feel this is only worth getting if you don't already have the original CD, unless ... Read More:

If you already own a copy of R.E.M.'s second album, then this is by no means a necessary purchase. If you don't, then it might just be worthwhile shelling out a little extra money for this imported version. Why? Because this is no tarted-up import with a b-side tacked on the end. This is a completely remastered version, made using the original 1983 master tapes. If you've heard the regular CD version of this album, you'll appreciate that the sound quality is ropey in places (not aided of course, by the fact that Michael Stipe laid down some of the vocal tracks while covered in a sheet). It's muffled, and lacking clarity. The quality of the sound in this remastered version hits you straight away. And I mean from the first note. The drums at the very beginning ... Read More:
