This record has their most focused political songs taking up the first half of the album.

Finest Work Song starts the record with the clarion call "the time to rise has been engaged / you're better best to rearrange".

Welcome To The Occupation is a Chomsky style look at the United States economic occupation of South America "offering the educated, primitive and loyal / welcome to the occupation" . When Stipe sings of "Sugar cane and coffee cup, copper steel and cattle / an annotated history, the forest for the fire" it reminds me of school lessons looking at maps of the world where the western countries are labeled with their name and developing countries marked only by the product they provide ... If you already own a copy of R.E.M.'s second album, then this is by no means a necessary purchase. If you don't, then it might just be worthwhile shelling out a little extra money for this imported version. Why? Because this is no tarted-up import with a b-side tacked on the end. This is a completely remastered version, made using the original 1983 master tapes. If you've heard the regular CD version of this album, you'll appreciate that the sound quality is ropey in places (not aided of course, by the fact that Michael Stipe laid down some of the vocal tracks while covered in a sheet). It's muffled, and lacking clarity. The quality of the sound in this remastered version hits you straight away. And I mean from the first note. The drums at the very ... Read More:

In the early eighties American rock music had stagnated. Obese with hoary stadium embracing poodle rockers the genre needed something to reinvent and revitalise and usher in a new wave of bands ready to head off at exciting fresh tangents. Arguably the release of REM,s debut album Murmur in 1983 was the pivotal moment that precipitated a whole slew of bands that shot blasted the clichéd excesses of American rock out of the limelight back towards the gaudy margins where it belonged.
Where a lot of the new US bands would empirically opt for the harder edged extremes of rock REM instinctively had a gentler , looser take on American rock that embraced the past while simultaneously taking it into a new direction. They eschewed rock clichés like ... Read More:

76.Suspicion [CD 1] by: REM

Music : Suspicion [CD 1]
"Suspicion" is a good example of Rem's lack of judgement in handling the Up lp. The song is a beautifully dreamy ballad with a twilit murkiness reminiscent of "I dont sleep I dream" but in fairness there are far better singles on Up such as "Walk Unafraid" & "Hope". Also a hazard of ordering this cd is that you may not get a version with all of the advertised tracks on - I only got live versions of "Electrolite"& "Man on the Moon" (the former is pleasing although uninspired and the latter is blighted by indistinguishable vocals). This gets 3 stars because its by Rem but its only really for fanatics.

Music : Out of Time [VINYL]
This was the time when the UK stood up and took notice of Athens' finest. Their bravery in issuing a mandolin led first single was regrettably offset by their foray into cheesy pop. 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Radio Song' aside, this is an excellent record that holds songs of great variety and boasts two of the best songs of that particular era in 'Losing My Religion' and a song so personal that Mr Stipe had to perform it with his back to the audience - 'Country Feedback'. They may have been thrust upon the UK market for all the wrong reasons (see cheesy pop reference above), but in this case the end very definitely justified the means.

Music : Imitation of Life
REM's last album 'Up' was a grave disappointment for the band's loyal followers, but the release of 'The Great Beyond' brought hope for the fans. Now 'Imitation of Life' gives the band a chance to redeem themselves with a good-old-fashioned REM rock song.

'Imitation of Life' brings a smile to my face - it's the lads from Athens, New Georgia, on top form again. The single is a sideswipe at the Hollywood culture which sees the band getting back to their roots as founders of the US punk movement back in the eighties. Although REM have never followed the true punk sound - they prefer to revel in their own delightful weirdness - they always get a message across in a beautifully harmonic style.

'Imitation...' is no exception, a wonderful sweeping ... Read More:
